Career Advice Australia (CAA) is an Australian
Government initiative aimed at providing Young
Australians with improved access to high quality
information on career opportunities in industry
and to assist Australian industry address skill
needs and engage in young peoples career
development.

6An Adopt a School Partnership Program
Stage 1-site visits and training 3 Days
7Stage 2 Work Experience Project
- The aim of this work experience project is to
enable students to understand, empathise and
learn from an elderly person with a view to
consider whether they would like to undertake
work with elderly people as a career. - Oral history interviews
- Art, craft or music project
- Develop a Myspace or Facebook site with an
elderly person/s - Other ideas to be negotiated.
8Stage 3- Public Presentation
- Students were able to present their projects to
an audience of Industry personnel, School staff
and parents at a celebration event
9- Students also received certificates for their
participation and completion of the project
10Stage 4- Students become industry Ambassadors.
- All Students then delivered a presentation to
their peers at school highlighting their
experience and the careers identified within the
industry
11South Australian Certificate Unit
- The SACE Board of SA approved an assessment plan
for this program enabling students to receive a
unit towards their secondary Certificate.
- Assessment includes
- Situated Learning Task 40
- Collaborative Task 30
- Portfolio Discussion 30
12Student Feedback
- I learnt that old people are fun and theyre not
what people say about them. You dont really know
what they are going to do next - The older people were very nice and easy to get
along with. - I enjoyed listening to their stories.
- I loved the atmosphere
- It gave me a good understanding of what aged
care involved - I enjoyed getting involved in the activities the
residents did - I really enjoyed listening to the talks and the
tour of the Uni - loved the people
- This nursing home was like a close knit family,
living together and enjoying time together - meeting and talking to people doing jobs/careers
in Aged Care gave me a good understanding of the
variety of jobs in the industry
13Outcomes
- 9 students completed the program evaluation
- All students enjoyed the 3 days
- 7 students believe they would like a career in
Aged Care, 2 were undecided - 7 students indicated the program had changed
their mind about a career in Aged Care - 7 students would be interested in VET studies in
nursing or Community Services - 8 students would like to become volunteers in an
aged Care facility - All students would recommend this program to
their peers

- Developed a course through the Australian Nursing
Federation for students in Yrs 10-12 - Planning teacher programs
- Opportunity for other organisations to engage
with schools - (Connell Wagner model)
- (Life Care Youth Ambassadors)
- Plan future programs for 2009
