recent periodic evaluation, applies to E5s and

  • September exam dates PO1 on first Thursday, PO2
on second Thursday, and PO3 on third Thursday.

62
Purpose of theAdvancement Examination
  • Advancement exams are designed to distinguish the
highest qualified from among all the qualified
candidates. They compare all candidates to each
other. An example of another test that does that
    is the SAT.

63
Some FACTS on how the Exams are Developed
  • Exams are written by an E7-E9 member of each
specific rating (EM, CT, PN, etc.....).
  • Exams are prepared 12 months in advance of the
test date. WHY? - Because of the lead time
required for editing, proof printing, numerous
    checks, ordering, printing and distribution.
  • Exams consist of 200 questions depending on your
paygrade, the number of Military Requirements
topics and In-Rate questions will vary.

64
More FACTS on Exam development
  • Topics, and ultimately questions, are supported
by tasks identified for a particular rate in the
    Occupational Standards.
  • ALL Occupational Standards will be covered over a
    period of time.
  • Every question must be supported by an
Occupational Standard or Naval Standard, and a
    Reference.

65
Advancement Exam Scoring
  • There are two types of examination systems The
    First
  • Criterion-referenced.
  • Criterion-referenced scores represent your
performance based on a specific standard. An
example would be a 100 question test that
required a minimum of 70 to pass. If you took it
and got 87 questions correct, your score is 87
and you passed. Most Navy schools uses this type
    of scoring.

66
Advancement Exam Scoring
  • There are two types of examination systems The
    Second
  • Norm-referenced.
  • Norm-referenced scores represent your performance
in relation to everyone else who took the same
exam at the same time that you did. You cannot
determine from a norm-referenced score how many
questions you answered correctly, only whether
you scored higher or lower than others who took
the same exam. A norm referenced exam measures
    performance relative to average performance,
whatever the average performance happens to be.

67
Advancement Exam Scoring
  • Selection for advancement looks at the whole
person. The exam score is only part of your
    Final Multiple scores. It includes
  • E-4/5/6 Final Multiple Performance Factor
Experience (LOS, SIPG, AWARDS, PNA) Exam Score
    (Standard Score)
  • E-7 Final Multiple Performance Factor Exam
    Score (Standard Score)

68
Performance Mark AverageHow are they computed
from FITREP/EVALS?
  • Evaluations used for
  • E4 candidates - the past 18-24 months
  • E5 candidates - the past 36 months
  • E6/7 candidates - the past 36 months
  • Only the ADVANCEMENT RECOMMENDATION block 45 of
the Evaluation/FitRep is used to compute the PMA.

69
Performance Mark Average Contribution to Final

70
P-N-A Points?!!? Where do they come from?
  • PNA points come from two sources
  • Final Exam Score
  • Performance Mark Average
  • Your Final Multiple Score was not high enough to
be selected for advancement. EXAMPLE The Final
Multiple Score (FMS) cutoff needed for selection
was 168.22. Your FMS was 168.18 and you were not
selected for promotion but did receive PNA points
that will be added to your FMS for the next
    examination.

71
PNA Points Computation breakdown
  • PNA points are determined using Performance Mark
    Average and examination Standard Score
  • PMA / S.S.
  • Top 25 1.5 / 1.5 points
  • Next 25 1.0 / 1.0 points
  • Next 25 0.5 / 0.5 points

72
New Profile Sheet
73
How can I best prepare for the exam?
  • Make sure you meet all eligibility requirements
  • Be a top performer, with your evaluations saying
    so
  • Learn as much as you can about your rating from
    all sources (Bibliography, References, OJT)
  • Study the new ADVANCEMENT HANDBOOK
  • START EARLY !!!! Dont wait until the last minute
    to prepare for the examination

74
Advancement Information
  • Advancement Handbooks, bibliographies and Rate
Training Manuals are available on the NETPDTC
    Homepage on the Internet.

  • Visit https//www.advancement.cnet.navy.mil to
    download bibliographies.

76
DISPELLING MYTHS
  • MYTH A number of questions are arbitrarily
thrown out of every exam (not scored). As many
    as 70 questions are tossed.
  • FACT All questions are used for scoring unless
there is a valid reason to delete a question.
    (e.g. outdated equipment)

77
Even More Mystifying Myths and Fascinating Facts
  • Myth There are Trick questions, as well as
the ever popular more than one correct answer
  • Fact Incorrect answers are meant to be close but
there is ONLY ONE CORRECT ANSWER

78
Another Popular Myth
  • MYTH Scoring the maximum 80 points on the exams
    means you ACED the exam
  • FACT Not necessarily so, 80 represents the
highest score attained for a group of candidates
taking the same examination (the best RAW score
    may have been an 87)
  • FACT It simply means you performed better than
all or almost all of the other candidates taking
the same exam (they may have scored 50 or 55)

79
