HIP PAIN FROM TRAINING FOR A MARATHON

While training for my second marathon, I
developed severe right hip pain.  I had been
running about 20 miles and increased to about 35
miles. At first, the hip pain was mild, and I
thought it would go away. After doing a 10 mile
run with friends, I could not walk later that
night. Every step was painful, and I had trouble
even walking to the bathroom. My doctor took
x-rays, and there was nothing broken.  He gave me
an anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxer. For the
past two weeks, I have been working from home and
was depressed. I spent most of the day searching
for a diagnosis and treatments on the internet
and was prepared to have surgery. I stumbled upon
the Virtual Physical Therapists blog and thought
I would give it a try since I could get an
immediate appointment.

My therapists, Kate is also a runner, so I
immediately felt that she could relate. She had
me move my hip in different directions and
compared it to my other side. She had me attempt
to rest my foot on my other knee, but it was too
painful. She gave me an exercise in which I put
my knee on a chair and push my hip forward. She
then asked me to cross my foot on my other
kneethis time I could do it! I was also able to
walk with less pain! She explained that I had a
problem inside my joint, and this movement
corrects it. I did the exercise for a couple of
days, and each day, my mobility improved. After
two days, I was able to walk with absolutely no
pain. Two weeks later I started back to a light
jog, less than a mile and today I am back to
running 5 miles!

Virtual Physical Therapists was convenient. I did
not even need to leave my house, and their
clinicians are very knowledgable.  Kate quickly
focused in on what was causing my pain and got me
back to being able to walk again on my first
visit. I have already recommended three of my
friends! Monique P. (Ohio)
