How Do Silicon Manufacturing Companies Create
Thin Silicon Wafers?

  • The process of silicon manufacturing begins with
the extraction of silicon. Silicon is the third
most abundant element in earth. However, it is
not simple to obtain as it does not exist in
ready-made form. Silicon is extracted using an
elaborate process. The impure silicon contains
calcium and aluminum, which need to be separated
using purification method to obtain pure silicon.
This article discusses various stages of silicon
    manufacturing.

3
Purification
  • Extending over two stages, the first stage of
    purification process uses high temperature,
exceeding 2000 degrees Celsius, for burning off
the impurities from silica sand after its
extraction. This is done in large electric
furnaces. Once the impurities are treated with
heat, the remaining material is 99 pure silicon.
In order to make fine thin silicon wafer CA which
are capable of transmitting weak electric
signals, the remaining 1 impurities also have to
be removed. For maximum effectiveness, the
purified silicon is turned into powder after
grinding and mixed with hydrogen chloride. To
further eradicate the remaining impurities, this
mixture is heated which results in 99.99 purity
percentage. After this process, the crystals are
obtained which are then further processed.

Silicon Ingots
  • After the purification of silicon, the next step
is to achieve consistent silicon ingots which do
not have any crystallized structures. Achieving
consistency helps improve conductivity of the
material. Therefore, before slicing silicon into
thin wafers, ingots have to be obtained through
melting purified silicon and then adding a seed
crystal. The seed crystal is nothing but small
piece of silicon, which accumulates and hardens
during the time it is rotated in the mixture. The
resulting product is an ingot having a consistent
structure with ideal qualities of a
    semiconductor.

5
Slicing
  • The consistent silicon ingot is then diced into
thin wafers. The usage or application of silicon
in an industry determines the size of each slice
or silicon wafer. The solar cells require larger
slices whereas small wafers are sufficient for
small electronics such as cell phones.
  • For precise and fine cutting of silicon ingots, a
diamond blade is used which can dice even
razor-thin wafers. The silicon slices are tweaked
for a variety of use because no slice is cut
    under hard specification. Instead, various
applications tailor these slices as per their
use. They can customize it during polishing and
    cleaning process.

6
Smoothing and Cleaning
  • To offer high effectiveness, the silicon
manufacturing companies make sure that silicon
wafers are smoothened and cleaned because a small
spot on a semiconductor can prevent your
electronics from functioning as per their
    requirements. For flawless semiconductors, thin
silicon wafers are polished and cleaned.

7
Polishing
  • The polishing process aims at smoothing out the
surface of thin silicon wafer. This is done using
both chemicals and mechanical equipment to create
a mirror-like surface, which then conducts
electric current perfectly. With the help of
polishing pads, finishing of sliced wafers is
carried out. A vacuum carrier holds the slices in
place and treats them with polishing pads, which
further refine the thin layer of wafer, leaving
    behind a smooth surface.

8
Cleaning
  • The finished product is then cleaned to get rid
of any residue material which can affect the
conductivity. It is carried out by professionals
in a clean-room. To protect the thin silicon
    wafers from any contaminants, professional
    cleaning staff wears protective equipment.

Silicon Specialist LLC
  • Best silicon manufacturing companies make sure to
follow the whole process, and carry out all
stages to provide high quality semiconductors.
Silicon Specialist makes sure to test the silicon
wafers after manufacturing process is completed.
This is to ensure the quality and efficiency of
the product. In the testing phase, the wafers are
put through the same conditions in which they are
expected to function in real-time. Only those
Silicon Wafers Manufacturing CA are distributed
    which pass the testing phase.
