Hair Loss Can Be Elusive That is Why It Is
Essential To Get To The Root Of The Problem
2
  • Introduction
  • Both men and women love to have a full head of
    hair.
  • But for women, long hair is a sign of beauty and
    youthful looks
  • This is not surprising because apart from facial
and physical appearance long hair supposedly adds
    to feminine charm.
  • Sadly many men and women suffer thinning hair or
    hair loss over time.
  • This condition can have a variety of reasons
    including congenital and acquired.
  • The right diagnosis and treatment requires a
    thorough clinical assessment by doctors.
  • Fortunately most doctors keep abreast of the new
advances in therapy, allowing patients to have a
    wide choice of treatments.

3
  • Male or female pattern baldness is the primary
type of hair loss. It is called androgenetic
    alopecia.
  • In men, the hair loss commences on top of the
temples, and the receding hairline takes the
shape of M. It may finally progress to baldness
  • In women, gradual thinning at the part line is
the first sign. This is followed by increasing
dispersed loss of hair from the top of the head.
  • It is rare for a woman to experience receding
    hair or become bald.

4
  • Androgenetic alopecia
  • Almost all women experience hair loss in one form
    or the other
  • It can commence at any time
  • After onset of puberty
  • Around menopause
  • Or with age

5
  • The risk is higher if there are incidences of
hair loss on either side of family
  • Male or female pattern baldness is caused by
    genetically determined reduction of anagen.
  • Women can inherit the gene from either parent.
  • Other causes can include
  • An autoimmune disease called alopecia areata
  • This is a rare disorder in which the immune
system damages the hair follicles leading to hair
    loss
  • Medication Certain medications like those
prescribed for cancer can cause hair loss as a
side effect. However, hair loss stops once the
    person stops taking the medication
  • Certain illnesses such as infection or high
    fever.
  • Traction alopecia It is a condition caused by
    tightly pulled hairstyles.

6
  • This can happen to anyone who pulls their hair
tightly to form braids, ponytail or dreadlocks.
  • Repetitive strain on the hair follicles can pull
out strands of hair or even injure the follicles.
  • In strict terms traction alopecia is not a
medical condition, but it has potential to cause
    severe psychological problems.
  • Does dandruff cause hair loss?
  • Dandruff is a very common condition among both
    men and women.
  • Admittedly, people have apprehensions whether
dandruff can lead to hair loss.
