KNOW WHICH QUESTION TYPE YOU ARE ANSWERING In the
PTE, there will be no indication that you have
finished answering a particular question type,
and that you will now be facing a new group of
questions. This makes it difficult to understand
whether you are answering single answer questions
or multiple choice questions. And, any mistake
in answering the questions will result in losing
marks. So, you should be able to identify which
type of question you are answering immediately by
just looking at the format. The single answer
questions will have radio buttons in front of
each answer option, while the multiple answer
questions will have boxes. This is the only way
you can differentiate between the two question
types. So, be careful, and keep a watch on the
type of buttons given beside your answer options
and answer accordingly. BEWARE OF NEGATIVE
MARKING If you think that simply guessing an
answer that you dont know and writing it down is
a good idea, as you might gain marks if the
answer is a right fluke, then hold on! You could
be putting yourself into trouble! This is
because some of the questions have negative
marking.

• For example, in multiple choice questions, if you
  choose two answers one right and one wrong,
  then you will gain one mark for the right answer,
  while losing out one mark for the wrong answer.
  Thus, your total for the question becomes 0,
  which would have been a 1 had you not chosen the
  wrong answer. So, make sure to choose only the
  answer you are really sure about.

  And, you need to match your reading style to the
  text type.
• Topic and gist Focus on the last sentence of
  the introduction, and the first sentence of each
  paragraph.
• Purpose Identify what the writer is aiming to
  do. Is he trying to tell a story, discuss a
  problem, present an argument, or describing an
  experiment?
