History
  • Over the past forty years scientists have
discovered that asteroids and comets have
collided with the Earth throughout its 4.5
billion year history. The impact of these Near
Earth Objects with our planet can be catastrophic
and still represents a natural hazard today.

4
Deep Impact
  • On the 4th of July, 2005, the Deep Impact
mission struck the outside of Tempel1 (a comet).
  • The space craft that hit the comet was launched
    in December 2004.

5
Stardust
  • The launch of the STARDUST spacecraft was
scheduled for the 6th of February, 1999. Stardust
flew through the dust atmosphere of comet Wild 2
on the 2nd of January, 2004, took pictures of the
icy cometary nucleus, collected samples of dust,
and brought them back to Earth in January 2006.

6
Rosetta
  • The Rosetta mission is being done by the European
Space Agency. It was launched on March 2, 2004,
the Rosetta spacecraft will meet and land upon
the surface on a comet in late 2014. The comets
    nucleus will be studied.

7
Asteroids
  • Asteroids are sometimes called minor planets or
    planetoids.
  • When asteroids collide there is a big explosion
that can cause a lot of destruction and sometimes
    can be seen from earth.

8
Comets
  • Comets are big balls of gas, fire, dust, or ice.
  • Comets orbit the Sun and when theyre close
enough to Earth they look like theyre moving
    faster than they are.

9
Flyby
  • Flyby of Asteroid 2004 FH. The other object that
flashes by is an artificial satellite.
