Open the project(Montana themes)
  • On startup, select Open an existing project and
    click OK or
  • From the File menu, select the command Open
    Project
  • In the Open Project dialog, enter the filename
    s\gisclass\MyProj1.apr
  • Click OK

The theme legend
  • Symbols and colors are set in the legend
  • In the Views Table of Contents (left side)
  • Can show or hide the legend
  • From the Theme menu, select the command
    Hide/Show legend

Edit the theme legend
  • To edit the legend, double-click on a theme in
    the table of contents
  • Double-click on County.shp the Legend Editor
    dialog appears
  • It identifies the theme and its symbol

Change the symbol
  • In the Edit Legend dialog, double-click on the
    symbol to change it
  • Double-click on the blue polygon the Palette
    dialog appears
  • The Palette dialog changes when you click on each
    of the buttons in the button bar

Point theme Change the symbol
  • Select the Montana cities theme Ct107.shp
  • Double-click on the theme in the table of
    contents
  • When the palette dialog appears, click the
    pushpin icon
  • From the Marker Palette, select a different
    symbol
  • Click the button Apply

  • Select the Montana cities theme
  • Double-click on the theme
  • When the palette dialog appears, click on the
    paintbrush icon
  • Select a different color from the Color Palette
  • Click the button Apply

Line theme Change line color
  • In the View table of contents, click on the
    Montana rivers theme hd43a.shp so that it is
    highlighted
  • From the Theme menu, select the command Edit
    Legend
  • Double-click on the line symbol
  • Click on the paintbrush to view the Color
    Palette then select a new color
  • Click Apply

  • On the Color Palette dialog, click on the pen
    icon to select the Pen Palette
  • Select a different line
  • Click Apply
  • Close the Pen Palette

Polygon Change color
  • Select the Montana counties theme
  • Double-click on the theme
  • When the dialog appears, click on the paintbrush
    icon
  • Select a different color from the Color Palette
  • Click the button Apply

    Fill Palette
  • Choose another fill pattern waffle
  • Click Apply

  • From the Fill Palette, choose the empty pattern
    in the upper left

Transparency allows you to simultaneously view
multiple polygon themes

Labels
  • Two ways to control labels
  • Auto-label
  • Theme properties
  • Select the theme
  • From the Theme menu, select Properties
  • Choose the label field Name
  • Click OK

Add individual labels
  • Select the label tool
  • Click on any city symbol to add a label based on
    the selected field (the Name)
  • To erase the labels, from the Theme menu, select
    the Remove Labels command

Auto-label
  • Instead of individual labels, add all the labels
    at once
  • From the Theme menu, select Auto-label command
  • In the Auto-label dialog, select the Label field
    to be displayed
  • Click OK
