1. Frame Rate and Bit Rate
1. 1 Image Compression
There are three different compression by model
and by application.
For best image display on PCs, it is necessary to
understand the following specification of each
model.
JPEG Frame Rate MPEG1 Bit Rate MPEG4 Frame
Rate and Bit Rate
5
1. Frame Rate and Bit Rate
1. 2 JPEG Frame Rate (1 x Camera and 1 x PC)
Set the frame rate of camera according to the
resolution and model as follows. (VN-C30U as an
example)
Figure 3 Frame Rate Setup of VN-C30U with 1 x PC
6
1. Frame Rate and Bit Rate
1. 3 JPEG Frame Rate (1 x Camera and Multiple
PCs)
If more than 2 PCs are accessed to 1 camera, the
frame rate of camera should be set to less than
maximum frame rate.
The maximum number of PCs connected 1 unit of
VN-C30U is as follows 15 PCs at 160 x 120, 10
PCs at 320 x 240, 3 PCs at 640 x 480
7
1. Frame Rate and Bit Rate
1. 4 MPEG1 Bit Rate (1 x Camera and 1 x PC)
MPEG1 image quality varies depending on the bit
rate setting while retaining 30 Frame/s.
It is recommended not use the bit rate higher
than 1.5Mbps because image quality between
1.5Mbps and 3.5Mbps is not noticeable.
Figure 6 MPEG1 Specification of Image
Transmission
8
1. Frame Rate and Bit Rate
1. 5 MPEG1 Bit Rate (1 x Camera and Multiple PCs)
If more than 2 PCs are accessed to 1 camera, the
bit rate of camera should be set to less than
maximum bit rate.
300kbps at 160 x 120 or 1,000kbps at 320 x 240
on each camera are JVC recommended bit rate
setting.
It is recommended not to use more than 7 PCs at
320 x 240 because of very low MPEG1 image quality
when each camera is set to 500kbps or less.
9
1. Frame Rate and Bit Rate
1. 6 MPEG4 Bit Rate and Frame Rate (1 x Camera
and 1 x PC)
Actual maximum frame rate at 320 x 240 is 24
frame/s, and it may go down to approx. 20 frame/s
when shooting fast-moving and/or complex objects.
1. 7 MPEG4 Bit Rate and Frame Rate (1 x Camera
and Multiple PCs)
When multiple PCs are accessed to VN-C10U, MPEG4
stream to each PC is the same resolution, bit
rate and frame rate. However, due to the
specifications of VN-C10U, the maximum number of
PC accessed to camera is 4. (5 or more PC access
is not possible)

2. System Design of Multi Viewer Software
(VN-S400U)
2. 1 JPEG Image Display on PC
When the frame rate of camera is set to10
Frame/s, PC process the display of 10 images/sec.
With VN-S400U, it is possible to display
multiple View Windows up to 16.
More View Windows the PC display, more process
capacity is required to the PC.
2. 2 JPEG Data Size
NOTE Actual data size may vary depending on the
object and operation environment.

setting vs number of view window using 4
different PCs.

View Windows Display

JPEG/MPEG4.

2. 6 Setting Change in multiple PCs environment
IMPORTANT The following setting can be changed
from any PC in multiple PCs environment. Once
the setting is changed by a single PC, all the
other PCs share the same setting of camera.
Image Compression JPEG/MPEG1/MPEG4 Setting
Value Resolution, Frame Rate, Bit Rate,
Compression, Picture Quality Control Pan/Tilt/Zo
om Control
NOTE These setting changes can be password
protected.
Example)
PC-1 changed the frame rate from 2 frame/s to 5
frame/s
Frame rate is changed to 5 frame/s that exceeds
the maximum frame rate, and consequently the
image update becomes not stable.
Frame rate is set to 2 frame/s as maximum frame
rate for 5 cameras at 320 x 240 (See 1. 3 JPEG
Frame Rate)

3. Recording and File Size
3. 1 Recorded File Segment
Standard Controller continue to record the images
in a single file until the recording stops.
VN-S400U automatically segment the recording and
create 1 file every 1 hour.

3. 2 Maximum Recorded File Size
The maximum recorded file size vary depending on
the application and Windows file system.
For long recording, it is recommended to use
VN-S400U and NTFS file system.
16
3. Recording and File Size
3. 3 Recorded File Format
There are two JVC original file format in JPEG
(rec and mjp) which are not compatible each
other. The mpg file in MPEG1 and asf file in
MPEG4 can be played with multimedia contents
player such as Windows Media Player. The m4r
is JVC original file format.
3. 4 Recording and Playback on VN-S400U
Sequential Display Mode
It is possible to set the sequential display of
up to 16 cameras in each View Window with
VN-S400U. VN-S400U record the images displayed
in View Window and does not record the images NOT
displayed due to the interval of sequential
display.

NOTE It is also possible to playback the
sequential images of Camera A, Camera B, Camera
C, Camera A.

3. Recording and File Size
3. 5 JPEG Recorded File Size Calculation for 1
camera
Data Size per image x Frame Rate x Recording
Time (s) Recorded File Size
Example)
Camera Setting Resolution 320 x 240,
Compression rate 2, Frame Rate 2 frame/s
Q What is the file size for 1 day recording? A
15(KB) x 2(frame/s) x 86,400(sec)
2,592,00(KB) 2.59(GB) (1K 1,000) Q
How many days the recording is possible with 40GB
Hard Disk ? A 40(GB) ? 2.59(GB) 15.444

3. Recording and File Size
3. 6 MPEG1 Recorded File Size Calculation for 1
camera
Example)
Camera Setting Resolution 320 x 240, Bit Rate
1,000kbps
Q What is the file size for 12 hours recording?
(1K 1,000) A 1,000(kbps) ? 8(bit/Byte) x
43,200(s) 5,400,000(KB) 5.4(GB) (1K

3. 7 MPEG4 Recorded File Size Calculation for 1
camera
Example)
Camera Setting Resolution 160 x 120, Frame Rate
15 Frame/s, Bit Rate 384kbps
Q What is the file size for 12 hours recording?
(1K 1,000) A 384(kbps) ? 8(bit/Byte) x
43,200(s) 2,073,600(KB) 2.1(GB) (1K
1,000)
NOTE 1) The above MPEG4 formula is applied only
to 160 x 120, 15 frame/s, 384kbps.
2) In case of 320 x 240, 15 frame/s, the size is
approx. 130 compared with 1) due to Codec
specification. 3) In case of 320 x
240, 30 frame/s, the size is approx. 120 130
compared with 2) due to GOV specification.
4) In case of 320 x 240, 7.5 frame/s, the
size is approx. 70 80 compared with 2) due to
GOV specification. 5) MPEG4 tend
to increase its size at lower bit rate, and
decrease its size at higher bit rate.

6. 2 LAN Port Setting
The specification of V.NETWORKS LAN port is as
follows
Figure 24 VN-S400U Sequential Display Mode
In order to assure the proper communication
between the camera and connected device such as
switching Hub, the speed and communication mode
should be set according to the following chart
If these setting are not correctly done, the
communication between the camera and connected
device is not stable or not possible. For
example, when VN-C30U is set to Auto Negotiation,
the connected device should be set to Auto
Negotiation, 100Mbps Half Duplex or 10Mbps Half
Duplex.
