The Citizen and the Community

• We hold these truths to be self-evident that all
  men are created equal, that they are endowed by
  their creator w/ certain unalienable rights, that
  among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of
  happiness

Categories of Rights

• The Rights of the Citizens come from three
  sources
• Declaration of Independence
• The Constitution
• Laws that Congress and the state legislatures pass

Categories of Rights

• Security Protection against unfair and
  unreasonable actions by the government. We are
  protected by the Due Process Clause of the 4th
  and 5th Amendments.

• Equality Everyone is entitled to equal
  protection under the law. All citizens are given
  a fair trial by a jury of their peers.

• Liberty Fundamental Freedoms as defined in the
  first Amendment. Ex 1st Amendment rights
  (Religion, Speech, Assembly, Petition, Press)

Limits on Your Rights

• Your Rights may be limited in order to protect
  the rights of others.
• Your Rights are not absolute There are limits on
  what you can do.
• My right to swing my fist ends at the tip of your
  nose!!

• Civil Rights Act of 1964
• Gave African-Americans
• Equal protection under the
• Law. Banned discrimination
• Not only by race, but also by
• Sex, religion, or national origin.
• (ADA Americans W/ Disabilities Act)

• special steps to insure that
• minorities and women gain
• Access to jobs and opportunities that
• Were denied to them in the past because
• Of discrimination.

  consent
• Eleanor Roosevelt
• Equal Protection under the law. All citizens are
  entitled to the same rights as any other citizen
  in this country.

• Duties Are things that we are required to do.
• Obey the Law
• Pay Taxes

• Service!!
• 4. Serve in Court
• Must serve Jury Duty
