• 1982 first worldwide AIDS case
  diagnosed in the Rakai District

• 1980s-early 90s 13 percent HIV/AIDS
  infection rate

• Today 6 percent (a leader in AIDS
  reduction and prevention in Africa)

• HIV/AIDS orphans project in Luwero district
  52 villages care for 4,000 orphans

• Gladys Nabukalu

• 64-year-old widow cares for 2 orphans

• most of her children have died of AIDS

• innovative hand- washing system

• raises pigs to sell at nearby market

  Bukoba and nearby rural communities

• Rose, Kennedy, Martha, Dennis

• Kennedy is HIV- positive and lost his
  father to AIDS

• HUYAWA buys medicine for him

• Rose and Dennis dont have parents
  (Kennedys cousins)

• Yustina, Happiness, Skovia

• Yustina 53-year-old widow, mother of 4
  children

• HUYAWA built this mud and water hut for 300
  has 10 yr. lifespan

• Her 2 boys (17 and 20) wont come home
  dont want to help and no room to sleep
