Advancement Via Individual Determination
An Introduction to the Program Mead High
School - January 2008
2
What is AVID?
  • AVID is a seventh through twelfth-grade system
to prepare students in the academic middle for
    four-year college eligibility.
  • AVID has a proven track record in bringing out
the best in students and in closing the
    achievement gap.
  • AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual
    Determination.

Who are AVID students?
  • AVID students have a willingness to work hard in
    an academic setting.
  • AVID targets students in the academic middle B,
C, and even D students who have the desire to
    go to college.
  • AVID students are capable of completing rigorous
curriculum but are falling short of their
    potential.
  • Typically, AVID students will be the first in
their families to attend college, and many are
    from low-income or minority families.

4
How will this work?
  • Students who apply and are accepted to the AVID
program will make the following commitments
  • AVID students will enroll in a full slate of
    academic classes for four years.
  • Once accepted, students enroll in the AVID
elective. For one period a day, for four years,
they - work on critical thinking and asking
    probing questions - receive academic
help from peers and college tutors -
    participate in enrichment and motivational
activities that make college seem attainable

5
Why AVID at Mead?
  • Mead High School currently serves students who
fit the AVID profile and could benefit from the
    program.
  • AVID is based upon sound instruction. These
    instructional techniques can be implemented
    school-wide, to benefit all students.
  • Implementing an AVID program at MHS is yet
another way to enhance the academic excellence
that has become an expectation of our community.
