Title: Dear Charles Stuart

1
  • 1660
  • Dear Charles Stuart
  • I am General Monck, a general in the Army that
defeated your father in the Civil war. Since the
death of your father things in England have
changed a great deal. The rule of Oliver Cromwell
brought stability and peace to this land,
although not all our citizens liked the harshness
    of his rule.

2
  • Two years ago Oliver Cromwell died and was
succeeded by his son Richard as Lord Protector.
This has not worked out well. Richard is a weak
man, lacking in intelligence and neither
Parliament nor the Army has any faith in him. We
begin to think that England should return to the
days of having a king again.

3
  • I am therefore authorised by the Army and
Parliament to invite you to return to England as
King Charles II, but with some conditions to
ensure that there will never be a return to
    tyranny and oppression.

4
