In 2001 global travel and tourism generated 4.5
trillion and is expected to increase 4 per year

Sustainability is defined as development or
progress that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of the future to
meet its own needs. - World Tourism
Organization
6
Expansion merely refers to growing larger
whereas development is the process of
improvement. Do we really want MORE?
7
A sustainable tourism program should ensure
efficient use of environmental elements related
to the tourism industry, with the least possible
impact on ecological processes, natural heritage,
wildlife and biodiversity.
8
Secondly, it must be respectful of the
socioeconomic elements of the host community,
working to maintain cultural rituals, mutual
understanding, tolerance, and heritage.
9
Stakeholder synergy and tension

uni-dimensional decision making. The challenge
of balancing the interests of business,
residents, government and visitors.
