1 Relationships between Personality Dimensions
Assessed by the Navy Computer Adaptive
Personality Survey (NCAPS) and the Big Five
- Donna K. Roland
- Ronald M. Bearden
- Hubert T. Chen
- Navy Personnel Research, Studies, and Technology
(NPRST/BUPERS-1) - Bureau of Navy Personnel
- Millington, TN
2Navy Computer Adaptive Personality Scales (NCAPS)
- Increase job performance
- Decrease unwanted attrition
- Enhance job/career satisfaction
3NCAPS Item Delivery
- Benefits of computer-adaptive testing (CAT)
technology - Lower testing costs and shorter time
- More precise measurement
- Increased user acceptance
- Zinnes-Griggs Pairwise Ideal Point IRT Model
utilized - Item presentation
- Items presented are tailored to individual
- Paired comparison item format that is resistant
to faking - Probability of item endorsement higher when item
matches individual trait level - Trait content intermixed across items
- Increases resistance to faking
4NCAPS Traits
Assesses traits required for success across most
Navy jobs

5Construct-Related Validation Study NCAPS vs.
Five Factor Model
- Motivation for conducting study
- Determine relationships between NCAPS traits FFM
representation of Personality - Develop hypotheses a priori linking 13 traits to
5 factors - Identify possible gaps in NCAPS trait coverage
6Five Personality Factors
- Openness to Experience
- Conscientiousness
- Extraversion
- Agreeableness
- Neuroticism
- Considered to be the gold standard in personality
research
7Methods
- Participants
- 220 University Of Memphis students
- Personality Inventories
- NCAPS
- 100 question IPIP
- The particular IPIP items that were used for this
study are modeled off of the previously validated

p lt .05 and p lt .01.
11Correlational Results(NCAPS vs. IPIP)
Correlations are statistically significant at
p lt .05 and p lt .01.
12Links between NCAPS traits with Conscientiousness
Factor
Dutifulness/Integrity
.305
Conscientiousness
.463
.486
Achievement
Attention to Detail
Correlations are statistically significant at p lt
.01.
13Limitations
- Method Variance
- IPIP is not adaptive
- NCAPS developed as Navy specific battery
- Facets
- Under-representation of trait facets due to
adaptive nature of NCAPS - Overall traits for IPIP instead of facets
14Conclusions
- Results suggest that all of the NCAPS traits are
somewhat encompassed by the FFM, with many being
highly related - Supports notion that NCAPS is a viable
personality measure conforming to current
psychological research - Bodes well for the NCAPS ability to predict job
performance
