Why Use Natural Pigments?
Synthetic pigments today are made to serve the
paint industry, in which producing paints for
artists plays a minor role. To achieve maximum
desirability in paint today, pigments are made
homogenous in shape, size and composition.
Artists material manufacturers purchase most of
their pigments from companies that mass-produce
them for other uses. A few examples include
ultramarine, cadmium and phthalo colors.

Azurite 10g
  • Azurite is a natural carbonate of copper usually
described as a bright blue or sometimes as a
greenish blue. Azurite varies in masstone color
from deep blue to pale blue with a greenish
undertone depending on such factors as the purity
of the mineral and the grade (particle size) of
the pigment. This fine grade (average 25 micron
particle size) of azurite is a bright blue with a
    greenish undertone.

Vivianite 10g
  • Vivianite is a rare mineral of hydrated iron
phosphate that exhibits an intense dark blue
color. Our vivianite comes from bogs around the
Moscow region, and has a dark blue masstone,
similar to indigo, with a reddish blue undertone.

Riebeckite Net Vol 4 oz
  • Riebeckite is a dark blue mineral from deposits
in Krivoi Rog, Ukraine. It has been identified on
wall paintings in Late Neolithic and Bronze Age
    Europe and the eastern Mediterranean.

Blue Bice 10g
  • Blue bice is the name given to a pale blue
    artificial basic copper carbonate with
approximately the same chemical composition as
azurite. Our blue bice is made according to an
    English recipe of the 18th century. 10 g (0.35
    oz).

Health and Safety
  • Natural Pigments artist materials do not present
any major hazard when used with care and common
sense. It should, however, be emphasized that as
with other chemical products, high standards of
general hygiene should be adhered to, both during
and after use of these products and warnings
given on individual products should be followed.
Prolonged contact with the skin and ingestion (or
swallowing) of the product should be avoided.
This includes avoiding practices such as applying
paint with the fingers or pointing brushes in the
    mouth.
