Title: Using Student Generated Notes as an Interface to a Digital Repository

1
Using Student Generated Notes as an Interface to
a Digital Repository
  • Lonnie D. Harvel
  • GVU Brown Bag
  • September 30th, 2004

2
Motivation
  • Both faculty and students use and like
electronic resources and most readily adopt them
if the sources are perceived as convenient,
relevant, and time saving to their natural
workflow. (Tenopir 2003, Council on Library
    Information Resources)

3
Embedded Access
  • Key terms are identified in student notes
  • Terms are matched to a list of key terms in a
    content database
  • Content database created for CNT project
  • A link to the set of relevant content is embedded
    into the student notes
  • Relevant content is ordered by level of
    difficulty
  • Based on chapter association

4
Making Notes Interactive
  • Opens the door to non-linear exploration of the
    content
  • Begins exploration at the Point of Reference of
    the students notes
  • May motivate increased note taking and review of
    notes
  • May motivate students to update and expand notes

5
Content Types in ECE 2025

Definition of Success
  • We will be looking for three specific changes
that will signify a positive impact
  • An increase in the overall use of online content
  • An increase in the perceived value and relevance
    of the content
  • And a change in the usage patterns that reflect a
broader use of the content over the entire
    semester.

What is ECE 2025
  • Sophomore level course Signal Processing First
  • Initial course in Electrical and Computer
    Engineering curriculum
  • Two 1-hour lectures
  • One 1.5-hour recitation
  • One 1.5-hour lab

15
Summary of Use
  • The Websites (WORD WebCT) are preferred over
    the CDROM
  • Use of content is generally in line with other
    successful educational repositories
  • Use of Streaming Video Content is rising
  • Use of content over the semester is spiky

16
What we do know
  • Perseus Digital Library Project 17 years old,
37,000 unique users, less than 11 use the
    content on a regular basis.
  • MIT Open CourseWare - 8 use content on a
    regular basis.
  • The CLIR study showed lower percentage of regular
    use for general digital libraries.
