First Things First
  • What IS a phrase?
  • A phrase is a group of words that is used as a
single part of speech and does NOT contain a verb
    and its subject.
  • There are adjective phrases, adverb phrases, verb
    phrases, infinitive phrases, participial
    phrases.
  • Today, we are talking about PREPOSITIONAL
    PHRASES.
  • Prepositional phrases are phrases that begin with
a preposition and end with a noun or pronoun.

14
NOTICE!
  • The prepositions always have an object.
  • We call these nouns and pronouns what they are
  • OBJECTS OF THE PREPOSITION
  • (How easy is that?)
  • When you label prepositional phrases on a
worksheet or in your writing, you will need to
  • Put (PARENTHESES) around the whole phrase.
  • Neatly write PP prepositional phrase over the
    top.

15
LABELING EXAMPLES

seat) and read (about fantastic adventures) (of
    famous explorers and pirates).

school) (along dusty roads) and never complain
    (of their tired feet.)

  • They show relationships between items in a
    sentence.

Mentor Text
  • Okay fine. Monday was not so good of a day.
Which was a surprise, because it started off with
two lucky signs, which fooled me. First, there
were exactly enough banana slices in my cereal
one for every spoonful. Then, as soon as I got to
school, my teacher said, The following students
are excused from journal writing so they can go
to the art room to work on their Welcome to the
Future projects. And I was one of the following
    students.
  • Sara Pennypacker , Clementine

34
