CSC 120
  • Overview of Library sources that will be used for
    the final project

2
The goal of todays session is for you to learn
to use a variety of Library resources such as
  • Voyager, the Librarys online catalog, for
    locating print and e-books
  • Databases such as Academic Search Premier,
Proquest, or Wilson Web for locating articles
  • The Library website, for information on
performing Internet research and citing with MLA

3
Print Books and E-books
  • Use the Librarys online catalog to search for
    print and electronic books
  • Try a variety of different searches using
keywords in the fields of Keyword Anywhere,
Subject Browse, Title Keyword, or Title

Databases / Articles
  • Databases are very large collections of journals,
    newspapers, magazines, and other printed
materials that have been scanned and digitized.
  • The information found in databases in general is
more reliable, accurate, and credible than what
    is found on the Web.

5
Databases / Articles continued
  • The search interface of a database is used just
like a search engine such as Google. Databases
have many more searching and search limiting
    options.
  • Use one of the Most Comprehensive databases,
such as Academic Search Premier, Proquest, or
Wilson Web and perform keyword searches
  • http//www.flagler.edu/library

Evaluate Websites According to
  • Accuracy Is the information reliable? Is the
    information fact checked?
  • Authority Who created the page? What are their
credentials? Look at the domain, i.e. is it a
    .com, .gov, .edu, etc.?
  • Objectivity Is the page biased? Is the page
designed to give the facts? Or is it to influence
    your opinion?
  • Coverage How broad is the coverage on a topic?
Is the whole story being told? Is anything of
    importance being left out?
  • Currency How current is the information on the
page? Does the page indicate when it was last
    updated?
  • Use the Librarys link Evaluating Websites
  • information on this page courtesy of New Mexico
    State University Library's web site
    (http//lib.nmsu.edu).
