Youth Representation at Synod Assemblies

• Resolution 22 called for the LYO Convention to
  strongly encourage congregations to increase
  youth representation at Synod Assemblies where
  youth are currently under-represented

WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT.

• Amazing leadership opportunity
• To learn about the church and how it works
• Youth are the leaders of the church present and
  future
• The voice of the youth needs to be heard
• Youth leaders are not given enough chances to
  show their passion and involvement in the church
• Youth need to take a traditionally adult position
  to attend synod assembly

• You can bring this back to your home synod, and
  get it passed at synod assembly
• These are examples of different resolutions that
  have been passed in other synods
• If you want to do this please start now this
  process it extremely long and tedious

• This is worth the work and energy because of the
  affect it will have on the church
• You can hold an educational session explaining to
  youth how and what happens at synod assembly

• This is a constitutional change so this is going
  to be a long process
• Youth may not be educated in parliamentary
  procedure or what is going on in the church

• Space and money may come up as a problem
• Youth may not be seem as mature enough

• It sound like there is no space in the church
• Congregations will be choosing what youth will be
  attending and they church will already give them
  vote in their congregation

• The need for additional people as chaperones and
  how housing works with this age group
• Some synods might have convention during this
  time

• You can dedicate a certain part of the hotel for
  the youth and the chaperones
• Convention could be held before or after assembly
  so maximum number of youth can be at assembly and
  convention

When time comes for voting

• It would be in your best interest to get as many
  youth from your synod to be go to synod assembly
  as a voting member or by attending as a visitor
• It is better to have youth attending as voting
  members so that the youth can have voice and
  vote and speak for their own resolution

Steps to get resolution passed

• Write resolution
• Get on agenda for Synod Council meeting
• Present at Synod Council meeting (good idea to
  have the backing of a S.C. member to help
  introduce the resolution to the Council)
• Synod Council makes a recommendation about the
  resolution that is read as assembly whether to
  have to pass or fail
• Voted on at synod assembly
• Constitutional change at next synod assembly

Final Notes

• Dont expect to have large representation of the
  youth the following year at assembly, it will
  take a couple years to get a large increase in
  numbers
• This process will take two years at the shortest
  so keep with it and keep the energy going
• The more awareness that you spread about the
  resolution and increase in the youth attendance
  the better!!!!!
