  • Creating a PowerPoint Presentation
  • The Basics

Getting Started
  • Click on the Office Button (upper left)
  • Select New from the Menu--this will open the New
    Presentation dialog box
  • Select a template if desired, or
  • Click on Create to select a blank presentation.

Home Tab--Slides
  • You may add a new slide by clicking on New
    Slide in the Home Tab.
  • Clicking on the will display the ten
    layouts available and allow you to select one.
  • You may also change or select a new layout by
    clicking on Layout in the Slides menu on the
    Home tab.

The Title Slide
  • Select the Title Slide Layout
  • Click the mouse button in the box or
    placeholder for the title. You may type in the
    title for your presentation
  • Click your pointer on the Subtitle placeholder
    and enter a subtitle, name, date, or other
    desired information.

Second Slide
  • In Slides, under the Home tab, click the mouse on
    the New Slide command.
  • Select the second layout, Title and Content.
  • You may click the title placeholder in order to
    add text at the top of the second slide
  • Click in the larger placeholder to add bulleted
    text

Saving Your Presentation
  • To save your presentation, click on the Office
    button, then on Save or Save As to bring up the
    Save dialog box
  • In the Save as dialog box, select the location
    and type of file to be saved.
  • Enter a name in the File name box, then click the
    Save button

Exiting Power Point
  • After you have saved your presentation, you may
    exit Power Point by clicking on File then Close.

Opening the Presentation
  • Click the Window Office button on the Menu bar,
    then click on Open (or press Ctrl-O)
  • Select the drive and folder in the Look in
    dialog box, click on the name of the presentation
    (the title) to select it, then point and click on
    Open

  • You may create subheadings on the bulleted text
    by using the tab key
  • This is a subheading under the main bullet
    above.
  • To return to a main heading, press Shift plus Tab
  • This returns you to a main heading

Viewing the Presentation
  • Slide View
  • You may display successive slides or screens by
    pressing the Page Up or Page Down keys
  • You may, on any slide, edit the text, change the
    layout, or add graphics
  • Note that there is a toolbar below the slide
    which is the status bar. On the right is the
    View Bar you may change the type of view and
    reset the zoom level.

  • Slide Sorter View
  • The second icon on the view toolbar (4 boxes) is
    the slide sorter view which can also be accessed
    through the View command on the ribbon.
  • You can change the order of the slides by
    selecting one (click on the slide) then dragging
    it to a new location

  • Notes Page View
  • Select Notes Page View from the View command on
    the Menu ribbon
  • Each slide is displayed above a box where you can
    add notes to use during your presentation

  • Slide Show
  • The third icon on the View toolbar enables you to
    view the slide in full screen mode
  • You may advance slides by clicking the mouse
    button, pressing the Enter key, or using the Page
    Up or Page Down keys
  • In this mode, you may press Ctrl-P and use the
    mouse pointer as a pen to temporarily draw on the
    screen (Ctrl-A reverses the action)

Text Editing/Enhancement
  • Text may be inserted, deleted, cut and pasted, or
    manipulated as with most wordprocessors
  • Text may also be enhanced through choice of fonts
    and sizes, or the use of bold, italic,
    underlining or shadowing (found in the Home tab
    of the ribbon)

Adding Graphics
  • Graphics can be added to a slide using the
    Insert and Clip Art selections on the ribbon.
  • Search the Clip Art gallery that pops up, select
    an appropriate graphic and insert it into the
    slide.

  • Graphic images can be resized and moved about
    within the PowerPoint slide using standard mouse
    commands

You may also insert BMP, GIF and JPG images

Newer versions of PowerPoint also support
animated GIF images and videos.

Inserting Shapes
  • You may insert shapes, SmartArt, and charts
  • You may color lines, fonts or the background

Printing
  • Click on Office Button on the Ribbon, then select
    Print
  • If not already displayed, select the correct
    printer for your system
  • Select the print range (the slides you wish to
    print)--all slides, the current slide, or select
    those which you wish to print

  • Select other options as desired, then click on OK
