18The Analyzed Standards
19Performance Tasks A Closer Look
- Sample 7th Grade Performance Task 1
- Students create a Venn Diagram to compare
characteristics of plant cells to animal cells.
Students should make sure that the
characteristics that are held in common are in
the shared space and that those that are unique
are in the proper outer areas. (1b, IE 7d) - Scoring Criteria
- A proficient response should include the
following (from the CA Framework) - Plant cell outer area chloroplast, large
central vacuole, cell wall determines shape of
cell - Animal cell outer area cytoskeleton determines
shape of cell - Shared area cell membrane, nucleus,
mitochondria

21Performance Tasks A Closer Look
- Sample 7th Grade Performance Task 2
- Students create a picture book, to explain how
energy available for human movement is obtained
from the energy captured by plants from the Sun.
Include relationship between photosynthesis and
respiration, diagrams, simple chemical equations,
labeled pictures with mitochondria, chloroplasts.
Be sure to explain all pictures and diagrams in
the proper sequence of events starting with
energy from the Sun. Information should be
gathered from a variety of print and internet
resources. (1d, IE 7b, 7d) - Scoring Criteria
-
- A proficient response should include the
following (from the CA Framework) - Role of chloroplasts (include discussion of
pigment) in photosynthesis to capture energy from
sunlight - Chemical Energy transfer from plants to animals
- Role of mitochondria in respiration in
liberating energy for work in cells -
-
-
22Performance Tasks A Closer Look
- Are there any differences between the two tasks
explored? - What is the cognitive demand of each?
- What determines the cognitive demand?

- Provide data for professional development that
focuses on collaborative teacher conversations
29Periodic Assessments A Closer Look
- When are the Periodic Assessments (PA) given?
- Assessment Windows vary depending on your
calendar and track - Single-Track Schools Refer to Memorandum 1106
Attachment B - Three-Track Schools Refer to Memorandum 1112
Attachment B - Four-Track Schools Refer to Memorandum 1113
Attachment B
30Periodic Assessments A Closer Look
- How many Periodic Assessments (PA) are given at
each grade level? - 6th grade has three assessments per year
- 7th grade has two assessments for the semester
- 8th grade has three assessments per year
31Role of School-Site Science Grade Level Leads
- Liaison between schools and LD expert/specialist
- Support implementation at the classroom level
