Flow Injection Analysis

CONVENTIONAL FLOW SETUP
Conventional SI setup comprises a bi-directional
syringe pump, holding coil, multiposition valve
, reactor coil (RC) and detector (Ruzicka
Marshall 1990). With six position valve up to
three reagents ( R1,R2,R3) can be used. High
resolution stepper motor driven pump is, along
with multiposition valve controlled by computer
and dedicated software. In a typical assay cycle,
sample and reagent are sequentially aspirated
into the holding coil, forming a stack of well
defined zones, this stack being, after the valve
has been switched, transported into the detector
by a flow reversal. Flow programming along with
random access to sample and reagent solutions,
provided by a multiposition valve yield
unprecedented versatility since all parameters
sample injection, solute dispersion and timing
are controlled by adjusting software without the
need for physical reconfiguration of the system.
Therefore, open architecture software is a key
component of sequential injection system.

PROGRAMMABLE FLOW
Sequential injection uses programmable,
bi-directional discontinuous flow, precisely
choreographed by means computer control. Sample
and reagents are injected sequentially, by means
of a multiposition valve, into a carrier
stream using a single syringe pump placed
upstream of the valve. Shown here are sample and
reagent zones, at the interface of which a
detectable product is formed. Flow reversal (
D,E) transports the reaction mixture into the
detector.
