  • Take out your Walk Like an Egyptian drawing and
    put it on your desk.
  • Write your name, date, and period number in the
    lower right hand corner.
  • For the first few minutes, we will present
    drawings to the class.

Mummification
  • Write down key terms in yellow. Add them to your

  • Embalming the art and science temporarily
    preserving remains to put off decomposition.
  • The Egyptians used embalming to preserve kings
    and queens for the afterlife.
  • They were one of the first civilizations to
    develop embalming.

  • Egyptians used mummification because they wanted
    to preserve the body for the afterlife.
  • They believed that preservation of the mummy
    empowered the soul after death, which would
    return to the preserved corpse.
  • Mummification was a long process that involved
    removing internal organs, drying out the body,
    and anointed with oils and perfumes.

Embalming Practices Today
  • Today, embalmers preserve bodies so they are
    presentable for funeral services.
  • When getting a body ready for preservation, the
    embalmer replaces the blood and fluids with
    formaldehyde and dyes. Formaldehyde is also
    poured into the body cavity.
