Draft Project outline in reflection
to EURATOM-Fusion-2007-1-1.7.3 CSA Materials
Research
2
0. Motivation (1) Needs for the fusion
programme - Long-term material development
detailed structural characterization on nano- and
microscopic level needed - Standard
characterization facilities are available in most
association labs - Additional characterization
methods employing synchrotron radiation and
neutrons will allow enhanced understanding
ofmicrostructural evolution and of in-service
behaviour - CSA can be used to strengthen the
application of these methods.
3
0. Motivation (2) Added value to the fusion
programme - Fusion materials programme will be
strengthened by a wide employment of SR- and
n-based characterization methods allowing
investigations from component level down to the
nanoscopic scale. - Especially smaller
associations will gain unprecedented access to
first rank, large scale European infrastructure
- Research groups, especially university groups,
can become active in the fusion field and support
fusion associations.

  • Key facilities to be integrated by CSA
  • synchrotron radiation facilities and
    synchrotron-based characterization allowing
  • - High resolution EXAFS and NEXAFS measurements
These methods provide a unique opportunity to
    measure the local
  • atomic structure the formation of
    chemical phases and.
  • High resolution photoemission measurements with
variable photon energies allow surface and
    near-surface sensitive
  • studies of formation processes for
    surface compounds and their electronic
    structure.
  • High intensity, low incident angle diffraction
    measurements provide access to structural
    phase characterization at surfaces and
    interfaces.

5
  • Key facilities to be integrated by CSA
  • neutron sources and neutron-based
    characterization
  • Neutron reflectometry allows to investigate
processes taking place at material surfaces
    during plasma-surface interaction.
  • Internal stress as well as very small voids,
    bubbles and precipitations distributions in
composites can be assessed by SANS.
  • Hydrogen isotope deposition patterns in 3D
component structures can be measured by
    neutron tomography.
  • PALS (Positron annihilation lifetime
    spectroscopy) provides essential quantitative
information on defects in materials at
atomistic, nanoscopic and microscopic levels with
    high very high spatial resolution.
  • proposal The CSA should aim at integrating the
use of synchrotron irradiation facilities and of
neutron sources into the fusion materials
    programme.

2. Materials to be investigated (EFDA
input) Focus on e.g. Tungsten Coatings
(permeation barrier, electrical insulation,
corrosion resistant) ODS steels Characterization
in support of modelling activities should
involve large-scale infrastructure, (or a split
into separate projects could be considered)
Use esp. of synchrotron radiation for surface
investigations related to the ITER-like wall
project.

3. Implementation of the support action (1) a)
identification of key facilities b) clarification
of user access to these facilities c)
identification of (university) groups which are
active facility users and work in direction
of interest d) team formation between
(university) groups and association laboratories
(two to four institutions per team) to carry
out research on relevant materials using
facilities identified under a) team prepares
activity plan number of teams to be funded under
SA 1015 teamscosts to be covered travel,
access to facilities, personnel (measurement and
evaluation effort)

3. Implementation of the support action
(2) Project evolution Year 1 establish 5-7
teams (consortium internal proposal procedure),
year 2 establish further 5-7 teams (consortium
internal proposal procedure) year 3 continue
and wind up activities Budget If feasible
Transfer of incurred costs from coordinator to
fusion associate. Fusion associate is responsible
to reimburse other team partners.
Consortium All fusion associates who are
interested in participation can become members of
the consortium. Membership also means duties
e.g. meetings, reporting, audit certificate

(3)(remark viewgraph was modified based on
further input after the meeting) Role of
EFDA Advices on consistency with long term
materials development plans Steering
Committee Membership four to five fusion
associates (including coordinator and EFDA as
observer) SC establishes overall plan of
activities, decides on proposals for teams,
monitors progress of work, instructs
coordinator Coordinator Reports to SC and to
Consortium (day-to-day management) carries out
payment of Commission contribution organises
annual reporting to Commission
