Title: Getting the word out about: Gun Control

1
Getting the word out aboutGun Control
2
Whats the Issue?
  • Citizens in favor of gun control argue that it is
too easy for criminals, kids, and other bad
    people to get guns
  • Citizens who are against gun control say that
laws cause hassles for those people who follow
the rules and also violate their second amendment
    rights

3
Gun Purchasing Laws in Indiana
  • No permit is needed to purchase a gun
  • No registration of firearms is required
  • No licensing requirements
  • You must have a permit to carry a gun

4
Facts about Firearm Use in Crime and Self Defense
  • Americans use firearms to defend themselves from
criminals at least 764,000 times a year.
  • In 1982, a survey of imprisoned criminals found
that 34 of them had been "scared off, shot at,
wounded or captured by an armed victim.
  • In the United States during 1997, there were
15,289 murders. Of these, 10,369 were committed
    with firearms
  • In the United States during 1997, there were
approximately 7,927,000 violent crimes. Of these,
    691,000 were committed with firearms.

A few viewpoints from some presidential candidates
  • In addition to having policies that will get
guns off the street, we do have to give young men
particularly a better chance of a future that
    includes educational economic opportunities
second chances when they get caught up in the
    criminal justice system. Hillary Clinton
  • I'm a strict constructionist, or I try to be.
The Second Amendment is about as clear as it can
be. It gives people the individual right to bear
arms. I agree with that. I think that is a
correct interpretation. That means that any
restrictions have to be reasonable. And those
restrictions largely have to do with criminal
background, background of mental illness, and
they should basically be done on the
state-by-state level. And thats the guidelines I
would use in dealing with it as president. Rudy
    Giulani
  • Some people are killed or injured with guns and
some law-abiding people want to use guns for
self-defense. How do you blend the two?
  • Make sure the weapons are designed safely with
    trigger locks.
  • Strong law enforcement so that theyre not
falling into the hands of criminals.
  • Look at a weapon the way you look at a car.
Youve got to know how to handle it. You should
    be licensed.
  • There are certain weapons that should be banned.
    Ralph Nader

Some terms to be aware of when listening to gun
control debates
  • "Trigger Locks" require entering a combination to
use the gun (or some other locking method) these
are designed to help protect children or other
people unfamiliar with the gun from hurting
    themselves.
  • The "Gun-Show Loophole" means that there are no
background checks when purchasing guns from an
individual. You must have a background check if
you purchase the gun from a vendor .

7
Now that I have learned the facts.
  • I believe there should be stricter laws about
purchasing guns. Even if you only want to own a
gun for hunting, isnt better to go through all
the paperwork than to have someone be killed?
  • Guns should also be required to have more safety
features. This will prevent kids from hurting
    themselves.

8
Be informed when you go to vote. Know what your
candidate stands for!
