Title: Write what you know

1
Write what you know!!
  • Critical thinking and writing

2
The Revisit- Write what you know!!
  • Consider the element potassium. From what you
know about the periodic table, based on its
    location, can you
  • Explain (in words) what its atom would look
    like? (Distinguishes how potassiums atom
    differs from other atoms)
  • What information on the periodic table helped
you to determine what it looked like?
  • Determine a physical property for this element?
  • Determine a chemical property for this element?
  • How did you determine the properties of this
    element?
  • Select an element that would have the same
    properties as
  • potassium.
  • Explain how you know the two elements share
    similar properties.

3
Your Task- step 1
  • Using the rubric- (detach papers)
  • Grade each of the 4 examples.
  • Below each sample, provide a comment or two as to
    whats missing/wrong.
  • You need to get this signed off for credit.

4
Your Task- step 2
  • Look at the bottom left corner of example sheet.
  • Group up by Letters- A to E
  • In groups, go through the examples.
  • Rank them from highest to lowest.

5
Your Task- step 3
  • The shortest person in your group will write- on
    white boards.
  • The tallest person will speak.
  • What example number was scored the highest? Why?
  • What example number was scored the lowest? Why?

    properties as
  • potassium.
  • Explain how you know the two elements share
    similar properties.

Example 2
  • Potassium would have 19 protons and 20 neutrons
in the nucleus of its atom. Surrounding the
nucleus, outside the atom are 19 electrons.
  • I looked for potassium on the periodic table and
its atomic number is 19 which are the same as
number of protons. The number of protons has to
equal the number of electrons. The number of
neutrons is determined by subtracting the number
of protons from the atomic mass.
  • The physical property of the potassium is that is
it a metal and a chemical property is that it is
very reactive. I determined its property by its
location on the periodic table, it is on metal
side and its in the 1st column which is the most
    reactive group.
  • The element sodium would have the same properties
as potassium. They are in the same group.

8
Your Last Task
  • Using your rubric.
  • Grade YOUR paper.
  • Place your score AND what was wrong/missing in
    the area below your writing
