1Ebscohost Tutorial
- This tutorial will show you how to search for
journal articles through Ebscohost.
2What Is EbscoHost?
- EbscoHost is a tool that allows you to search
a single database or many databases at once.
Each database contains many electronic journals.
3Where can I find EbscoHost?
- On the UW-Richland library home page, click on
Finding Journal Articles.
4Then select the top link.
5Select EbscoHost
6The UW Colleges subscribe to over 30 databases
searchable through EbscoHost. Here you will find
a brief description for each.
7Check the boxes of any of the databases you wish
to search, then hit Continue at the top or
bottom of the list.
8You may put terms in one or more of the three
boxes on the left. Then select the type of
search for each.
9Here you will find several options to narrow your
search. See the next slide to learn more about
these limiters.
10Limiters
- Full TextThis means that all of the articles
retrieved will be available in full text through
EbscoHost. You will be able to view the articles
in their entirety, print them out, or e-mail the
URLs to yourself to read or print out later. - Published DateUse this option to set a specific
date range for the articles you wish to see. - Peer-Reviewed JournalsThese journals are
generally regarded as the most prestigious and
academically reliable. To be published in a
peer-reviewed journal, each submission must
undergo a thorough review and in many cases
editing process by a panel of leading scholars in
the respective field. - Click on the Help button in the upper right-hand
corner to find out more about limiters and many
other aspects of EbscoHost.
11Well start with a single term search, entered as
Subject. We only want full text and
peer-reviewed journals.
12This search gives us 210 results. Note the list
of additional subjects. Youll see more about
this later.
13Now well add the term war as something that
could come up anywhere in the text of the
article.
14This search gives us 106 results104 fewer than
our previous search. Adding terms with the
connector and will narrow your search.
15Now well add MRS. Dalloway (Book) from the list
of subjects that opens up by clicking on the
arrow. Just click on the selection.
16Were now down to 19 results.
At any point in your search, slide the moveable
date bar to bring up only more recent articles.
Then click Update Results.
17If you click on a title, it will bring up a page
like this. From here you can e-mail the article
to yourself or put it in your Ebsco Folder for
future reference.
18Requesting an Article
- In our search, we specified Full Text Only,
which will limit the results to those available
in full text through EbscoHost. -
- Not limiting your search to Full Text will bring
up more results, some of which will be available
in full text through other aggregates, like
Wilson Web. Others wont be available in full
text anywhere. -
- In these instances, you will have to request the
article through ILLiad, or InterLibrary Loan.
19 How do I know if the article is in full text?
-
- Lets compare two results in a search where Full
Text has not been selected. ..
20This article is available in full text.

26How long will it take to get articles from ILL?
- It usually takes a few days to receive requests.
You should plan on four or five days, though it
generally doesnt take that long. - Articles are often sent electronically in these
cases, you will receive an e-mail with a link to
the article. - If it is mailed, you will be contacted by
someone at the library. You may then pick up
your material at the circulation desk.
