  • Purpose of the Workshop
  • The globalization of trade and the growing
    importance of food safety to consumers is
    changing the approach to food production
  • All stakeholder groups represented here today
    (government, industry, academia and consumers)
    must work together and be proactive in their
    approaches to food safety, especially with issues
    such as BSE remaining at the centre of everyones
    attention
  • Much is already being done across Canada to meet
    the new food safety challenges, and you heard
    about many aspects during the presentations and
    discussions yesterday

  • Purpose of the Workshop
  • You, collectively, have been invited to
    participate in these next 2 days to
  • consider ways to further coordinate food safety
    activities between governments, industry,
    consumers and academia
  • consider ways to improve communication among
    stakeholders
  • discover ways to better utilize resources for
    food safety activities
  • develop good ideas that could ultimately be
    implemented as part of a national food safety
    strategy
  • The recommendations that come from these 2 days
    will be used to help strengthen Canadas food
    safety system, a belief our many sponsors hold

  • What will Happen to the Recommendations
  • We know that the next 2 days are a significant
    investment of your time and energy, and
    appreciate that very much
  • We want to ensure that we utilize the expertise
    in this room to develop a list of excellent
    recommendations. We will ask you to focus on top
    1 3 priorities.

  • From here, the following steps will occur with
    your recommendations
  • The recommendations will be collated.
  • Recommendations will be submitted to the Planning
    Committee, which will analyze them and prepare a
    Recommendations Report, by the end of May
  • While preparing this Report, the Planning
    Committee may need to contact attendees at this
    workshop to get further clarification as
    needed.
  • Once translated, the Recommendations Report will
    be circulated, mid-June to all attendees at the
    Workshop and to other key groups/individuals for
    their consideration in the development and
    delivery of their respective programs and
    initiatives.
  • A summary of the Recommendation Report will be
    made public by the end of June

  • small facilitated break-out groups will be
    utilized
  • break-out groups will consist of representatives
    from all the stakeholder groups and expertise in
    different subject areas
  • We expect that time will be at a premium
    throughout the 2 days, and thank you in advance
    for doing your best to adhere to the timelines
    set up. Through trial runs with the facilitator
    group, we have designed a process to maximize the
    values of the recommendations to be brought
    forward
  • We will use a technique called RACI to help each
    group develop some detail around each
    recommendation.

  • Each break-out group will cover 5 different food
    safety subject areas over the 2 days
  • Food safety research
  • Surveillance of zoonotic and foodborne illness
    and of food hazards
  • Food safety policy
  • Food inspection (to include discussions on
    standards, HACCP, etc)
  • Food safety training
