3Prospector
- Unified catalog of 23 academic, public, and
special libraries in Colorado and Wyoming - Over 20 million books, journals, DVDs, CDs,
videos and other materials held in these
libraries - A shared collection
4Goals for the Project

- Save time for selectors
5Scope of the Project

- Undergraduate materials
- Four subject areas
- Economics
- Mathematics
- Political science
- Religion
- Two vendors
- Blackwell
- YBP
6Participants

- Colorado College 12.2
- Colorado State University 14.1
- Regis University 1.6
- University of Colorado at Boulder 20.0
- University of Denver 38.6
- University of Northern Colorado (1 subject)
1.0 - University of Wyoming (3 subjects) 2.5
- (Budget percentages for fiscal year 2008/09)
7Vendor Responsibilities
- Follow a purchase plan model no returns
- Determine titles and number of copies to be sent
based on the profiles - Bill institutions directly
- Follow current institutional standards for
materials processing
8Profiling
- All books (undergraduate and graduate) with one
vendor - Institutional collection priorities
- Number of copies based upon anticipated usage
9Profiling Example (Economics)
10Distribution of Books
- Individual profiles
- Usage limits
- commitment
- Weekly patterns
11Some Numbers
- 4,207 titles received in fiscal year 2007/08
- 933 economics
- 438 mathematics
- 2,365 political science
- 471 religion
- 191,099 spent in fiscal year 2007/08
12Assessment Quantitative Measures
- Quantitative data from vendors
- Snapshots in Prospector
- Collection analysis using Spectra Dimension
13Assessment Qualitative Measures
- Vendor feedback
- Selector feedback
- Feedback from acquisitions unit heads
- Review of titles missed
- Review of titles that would have been sent
14 Religious Studies at CU
-
- Paul Moeller
- Bibliographer for Religious Studies
- University of Colorado at Boulder
15Whats working
Relatively easy to set up (individual
bibliographer) Little effort required to
maintain Happy with the materials
received Happy with the rate of duplication
across participating libraries Developed a
better working relationship with other Alliance
libraries/librarians Developed a better
understanding of CU-Boulders religion profile
16Not so well
More work for Acquisitions Shipments are a
little irregular As religion is with YBP its no
longer with the Libraries norm (BNA). Reduced
cooperation with/from other CU-B bibliographers
Not a part of CU-B developments (virtual
approval) Doesnt address e-books Hasnt saved
me time

28Initial Problem 2 vendors assigning different
call numbers
Query1
29Project has Decreased Duplication Slightly
30Project Usage by Title
31How Project Evaluation was DoneMicrosoft Access
- Merging two vendor data files PLUS Prospector
holdings data - Blackwell ISBN YBP ISBN13
- Finds duplication between BW and YBP
- Uncovers title-by-title receipts and miscues
- Shows selector behavior firm orders vs.
automatic project receipts
32Shared Plan and Prospector
- Prospector often offered more redundancy than the
8 participating libraries
33DU Response from Community
- No complaints from faculty or students.
- This is likely because we contributed a larger
amount to the collective pot.
34DU Political Science Summary
- 1075 Political science titles (Js) through shared
plan - 64 titles in the Js ordered apart from the plan
- Generally plan is working well
- The shared plan has saved many hours of my time.
- I would highly recommend using only one vendor
35Whats next?
- Examine the impact of the plan on the shared
collection using Spectra Dimension - Consider possible modifications , such as a more
limited print plan and e-book consortial deals
with publishers that include one print copy for
the shared collection - Decide whether to modify the plan or discontinue
it
