FULFILLING THE LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT AND THE
CERTIFICATE IN KHMER
Introductory and intermediate coursework in Khmer
may be used to fulfill the foreign language
requirement for all bachelor's degrees on the
Manoa campus. Upon completing 15 credit-hours
beyond the intermediate level with a 3.0 GPA in
his/her coursework, the student may apply for a
Certificate in Khmer.

WELCOME TO THE UH MANOA FILIPINO PHILIPPINE
LITERATURE PROGRAM!
"Filipino in thought, word and deed. These words
mirror the essence of a true Filipino. They serve
as cornerstones to the aspirations of the UHM
Filipino and Philippine Literature Program. The
program aims to enrich the consciousness and
thoughts of students to enhance their sense of
self-identity as Filipinos and to strengthen
their capability for meaningful discourse in
their own language. The program also aims to
cultivate Filipino values such as respect, word
of honor, integrity and sense of community.
Toward this end, we pray that they may take to
heart the resolve to a life of honor.

The Indonesian language (called bahasa Indonesia
in Indonesian) is with over 200 million speaker
the largest language in South East Asia.
Indonesian is the modern name for the Malay
language which is also spoken in South Thailand,
Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei-Darussalam, and Timor
Leste.

CERTIFICATE
The Certificate in Indonesian Language is granted
by the University of Hawaii upon recommendation
from the Department of Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific
Languages and Literatures. In order to be
considered for this certificate, a student must
complete 15 credit hours beyond the intermediate
(201-202) level in Indonesian. Requirements 15
credit hours beyond the intermediate level in the
language of choice, including 6 credit hours
in continuing language study (IND301-302-401-402)
9 credit hours in language, literature, or
structure courses selected to complement the
major field of study, (e.g. IND461-452-454).
Where the student has specialized interests or
the instructors consider that a specialized
curriculum would better fit the students needs,
up to 6 credits of IP 499 may be substituted for
the 400 level courses listed above.

THAI LANGUAGE PROGRAM
Thai language courses at University of Hawai'i at
Manoa are offered by the Department of
Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures, College
of Languages, Linguistics and Literatures.
Courses relating to various aspects of Thailand
such as History, Anthropology, Economics are
offered in various departments at the university,
and are coordinated by the Center of Southeast
Asian Studies, School of Pacific and Asian
Studies. First-Level and Second-Level Thai
courses may be used to fulfill the foreign
language requirement for all bachelor's degrees
on the Manoa campus. Thai 201-202 and 301-302 are
designated as "Writing Intensive" courses and
satisfy "Writing Intensive" Focus Requirement of
UH-Manoa.

The Vietnamese language belongs to the
Austroasiatic language family. As the official
language of Vietnam, Vietnamese is spoken by
approximately eighty million people in Vietnam
and about three million expatriate Vietnamese,
half of which live in the USA. There are three
mutually intelligible main dialects differing in
terms of pronunciation and to a certain extent in
vocabulary Hà N?i (Northern Vietnamese), Hu?
(Central Vietnamese), and Sài Gòn (Southern
Vietnamese). The Hà N?i dialect is now often
considered the standard dialect.
Vietnamese is a tonal language, where the meaning
of each word depends on the tone in which it is
pronounced. There are six distinct tones in the
standard Northern dialect. The tones are denoted
by diacritic marks placed above or under a
word. The current Roman writing system of
Vietnamese known as ch? Qu?c ng? was developed by
Catholic missionaries in the seventeenth century,
but was not officially used until the beginning
of the twentieth century.
