2
What will it be like?
Do I get a new box of crayons out of this deal?
You may be feeling nervous, excited or both!
Will I get to eat lunch?
Will I survive?
Do I start today?
Do I really want to do this?
3
Heres just a little dab of wrangler advice to
help you smooth out the ride.
4
Read to the young folk every day!
Not reading to the young every day is like
putting them out on the range without a horse!
Turn off the t.v. and video games.
5
Talk about print.
  • Point out and discuss familiar logos and
    environmental print
  • (Find specific letters on signs, cereal boxes,
    calendars, magazines, labels, etc.)
  • Help her recognize letters in her name and in
    friends siblings names.
  • Let him make his name with plastic letters,
    stamps, macaroni letters, etc.

6
Use math and logic in conversation and daily
activities.
  • Play board games.
  • Count frequently. (Seconds at a stop light, coins
in your pocket, plates on the table, etc.)
  • Encourage problem solving.

?Sort objects according to their similarities.
7
Be involved.Help your child to know that
education is important.
  • Come to Meet Your Teacher Night in August.
  • Attend parent conferences and PTA meetings.

?Read and respond to newsletters, calendars,
notes, etc.
8
Be punctual.
  • School begins at 745.
  • Your child can miss being the leader when
    arriving late.
  • School dismisses (most days) at 330.
  • Your child can become upset when you are late.

9
Is my child ready for kindergarten academically?
  • Can your child listen to a story and answer
    questions about that story?
  • Can your child write his/her first name?

?Does your child know some letters of the
alphabet?
?Does your child know the eight basic colors?
?Can your child count to five or more?
10
Is my child socially ready for kindergarten?
  • Will your child be five years old before summer?
  • Can your child follow directions and complete
    tasks?

?Has your child had a successful experience in
preschool?
?Is your child able to be away from you without
experiencing separation anxiety?
11
Not!
Isn't kindergarten all about playing and painting?
By the end of the year, they can...
read and write sentences!
count to 100 or higher!
tell you a lot about the 7 continents!
add and subtract!
12
Encourage independence.
  • Help your child learn to dress, clean up and help
    with chores independently.

?Allow your child to have some alone time. He
should be able to work/play independently for at
least 10 minutes.
  • Look for opportunities for her to make her own
    choices. (clothing, activities, etc.)

13
Yes, I think were ready but what about supplies?
?Our PTA will be ordering supplies so you dont
have to fight the crowds! Call the school office
if youd like to avoid the crowds! Yahoo!
  • Your kindergartener will need a few additional
supplies to keep at home in order to complete
    homework assignments. (Pencils, crayons,
    scissors, glue, index cards)

14
Anything more?
?Your child will also need a backpack (without
wheels)
and a resting towel
Especially during the winter when coats are
necessary, our lockers are overflowing and do not
have room for a large blanket or sleeping bag.
15
What if we think of more questions later?
Check out the R.W. web page. It is a full of
information.
Send us your questions and we'll answer them on
the web page so that all can see the answers.
Call the school office.
16
How do we rope in the 1st day of school jitters?
? Prior to the first day, let your child
experience the room and new friends at Meet Your
Teacher Night.
? On the first day, give a quick hug and kiss
goodbye and then let us help your child feel
welcome while you exit quickly.
17
May your wrangler days at Roscoe Wilson be full
of
learning
laughter
and friendships.
fond memories
smiles
understanding
