Significance of Identity Management
  • Identity Management and Security challenges are
    second only to IT Funding on the EDUCAUSE list of
    Top 10 IT Issues in Higher Ed because
  • We have an increasing, irreversible reliance on
    electronic transactions
  • Between Campuses and Individuals
  • Among Campuses within the System
  • Between Campuses/System, and other Institutions
    and Agencies
  • Therefore we need an infrastructure to enable,
    reliable, secure transactions.

Benefits of Identity Management
  • Reduce complexity and cost of systems/application
    development and integration
  • 20 of individual application overhead is related
    to identity management
  • Simplify the user experience
  • Reduce the number of User IDs and Passwords
  • Provide more direct access to core services
  • Help protect privacy and confidentiality
  • Provide more reliable Authentication and
    Authorization for all applications
  • Reduce the number of identity data repositories
    that could possibly be compromised

Progress to Date
  • ITAC started discussion and planning in Fall 2001
  • Multi-campus working group formed and recommended
    system-wide coordinated approach in Spring 2003
  • Received TSC endorsement to develop the Secure
    Identity Management Infrastructure (SIMI)
    initiative in Spring 2004
  • ITS-TIS moved forward with central leadership
  • Director brought on board February 2006
  • System-wide technical group formed and now
    meeting regularly
