Dreaming BigGeorge
  • His mother, Ella Jenkins Mack was the dominant
    figure in his life.
  • He was influenced by a dentists during a visit he
    had as a child which sparked his interest in
    dentistry.
  • Grew up in Newark, in an apartment building in
    the ghetto.
  • Life threatening situations as a child on a day
    to day basis.
  • Part of a dysfunctional family without a
    constant male role model in the household.
  • Found positive role models in strangers and other
    kids parents.

  • He loved school he was motivated by his mother
    and teachers.

  • The dominant figure in his life is his Ma.
  • Majority of his childhood he and his mother lived
    with his grandma (Ma). He had a very close
    relationship with his Ma.
  • His actual mother developed drug addiction and
    could not function properly His father was a
    heroin addict and spent the majority of his time
    in jail for petty crimes.
  • He was a smart kid and was enrolled in the
    gifted and talented program in elementary
    school.
  • Despite his mothers drug use she always urged him
    to excel.
  • Admires his grandmother for graduating college
    and becoming an RN.

Rameck continued
  • Was taught the importance of family.
  • When he was 14 his father noticed that Rameck was
    headed down the wrong path. Hanging out with the
    wrong kids, acting like thugs, trying to define
    manhood by wild foolish behavior. His dads words
    touched him.
  • Spending time in Juvenile detention set his
    perspective straight.
  • He was in between his parents drug addictions and
    felt unprotected and unloved.
  • Performed in many plays and wanted to a
    thespian.
  • Although his mother feared that if she didnt
    take action he wouldnt attend college, so she
    enrolled him in University High School where he
    met George and Sam.

    of crime and violence would make it hard to
    imagine a child could survive in.
  • only 30 of people who apply to US medical
    schools actually gain admissions. This means that
    70 of premeds who apply to medical schools do
    not get in.

  • Growing up in an era where drug dealers would
    sell their drugs on every corner.
  • The highest recorded amounts of muggings and
    robberies. Shootouts on the streets, near
    playgrounds and schools.
  • Negative peer pressure all around them.
  • Dysfunctional families which cause stress.
  • Their families did not have much money.
  • Its was the 1980s, a decade in turmoil without
    the guidance and support of a male figure at
    home.
