Title: A DECADE OF INTENTIONAL MINISTRY FOCUSED ON RAISING UP A

1
  • A DECADE OF INTENTIONAL MINISTRY FOCUSED ON
RAISING UP A GENERATION OF JESUS MEN AND WOMEN

2
Is Next Generation Ministry Biblically Necessary?
  •

3
The Question of Relevance?
  • NGM.equips students to interpret and apply
Gods word to all of life, taking into account
the relevant issues and the development needs of
    adolescents
  • Dr. Eric Larsen
  • Director of the Global Youth and Family Ministry

Setting the Stage for Youth Ministry
  • In creation Cultural Mandate Gen 128Filling
the earth is more than procreation.
  • In the Fall Genesis 316Pain in fulfilling the
Cultural Mandate Matthew Henry says child
bearing is best understood as child rearing.
Sin makes the process of raising children
    something that requires help.

5
  • Genesis 4 Devastating effects of sin are upon
the family as Cain kills Abel.
  • Genesis 6 Corruption spreads from one family to
    whole earth.
  • After the flood Genesis 91, 7 Be fruitful and
    multiplyemphasis on the generations.?
  • Destroying the family again Ham

6
  • Genesis 11 Tower of BabelPeople dispersed for
their own goodGod begins calling his people
    together with three distinct purposes.

Gods People
Discipleship
8
  • Important to recognize that the family is the
primary social structure within the Covenant
community but it is not above the Covenant
    community

9
  • Gods kingdom purpose for his people is both
geographic in the nations (Matthew 28, Genesis
    12, 15, 17, Acts 1) and generational (Deuteronomy
    5, Psalm 78).
  • Doesnt change with formation of the church in
Acts 2Dispersion of the people to the nations
and promise reiterated to the children

10
Where in Scripture do we see Gods love of
children demonstrated?
11
Great Expectations 2009-2010
  • Youth and childrencomplementing, not competing
    ministries
  • Responsethe call needs to come from church
    leadership
  • Parentsthe church could do better equipping
    parents to disciple children
  • Expectationsneed to see our children ready to
serve and give back during adolescent years

12
PRESENTING CHRIST TO CHILDREN
  • How do we effectively implement Deuteronomy 6 in
    this culture at this time?

13
TRANSFORMING CHILDREN INTO SPIRITUAL CHAMPIONS
  • Results of a 2-year study of theevangelical
church in America by George Barna show
  • 93 of young people consider themselves to be
    Christian by age 13
  • 35 are absolutely committed to the Christian
    faith
  • 4 affirm orthodox beliefs
  • This study is now 5 years old and the numbers are
    still declining
  • 75 of 15 year-olds are leaving the church

14
  • All authority in heaven and on earth has been
given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of
all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded
you. And surely I will be with you always, to the
    very end of the age.
  • Matthew 28 18-20

15
John Piper (World Magazine)
  • America is now one of the top four nations in
the world with the largest unchurched population.

16
TRANSFORMING CHILDREN INTO SPIRITUAL CHAMPIONS
  • Having devoted more than two decades of my life
and all of my professional skills to studying and
working with ministries of all types, I am now
convinced that the greatest hope for the local
church lies in raising godly children. Every
year, tens of thousands of parents are brought to
faith in Christ because one of their children was
so changed by his own relationship with the Lord
that the parent could not ignore the power of
Christ any longer. Further, we have discovered
that peer evangelism among young childrenis one
of the most prolific and effective means of
evangelism in the nation. In addition, every
year hundreds of thousands of uncharted people
explore Christian churches in their search for a
spiritual anchor. Among those who have children
in tow, the largest share who get involved in
congregational life select their church because
of the quality of the childrens ministry.
  • George Barna

17
TRANSFORMING CHILDREN INTO SPIRITUAL CHAMPIONS
  • Research summary
  • If you want to have a lasting influence upon the
world (or the church), you must invest in
peoples lives and if you want to maximize that
investment, then you must invest in those people
    while they are young.

What are we trying to produce? A KINGDOM
DISCIPLE
  • By the Word and the Spirit
  • What is a Kingdom Disciple?
  • One who has
  • A Heart that loves King Jesus.
  • A Mind that thinks like King Jesus.
  • A Life that follows and
  • serves King Jesus.

19
Practically speaking, what does that look like?
  • 2020In ten years can we expect to see a fourteen
    year-old who
  • LOVES JESUS
  • LOVES HIS CHURCH
  • LOVES HIS WORD
  • SERVES HIS PEOPLE
  • NEEDS HIS PEOPLE
  • ?

20
Can we expect to see a fourteen year-old who
  • TRUSTS JESUS IN TRIALS
  • FINDS STRENGTH IN ETERNAL SECURITY
  • LONGS TO SHARE THE GOSPEL IN WORD AND DEED
  • RECOGNIZES THE ENEMY AND HIS SCHEMES
  • PRAYS CONTINUALLY THAT THESE TRUTHS MAY BE
CERTAIN IN HIS LIFE AND IN THE LIVES OF HIS
    FAMILY AND FRIENDS
  • ?

21
LUKE 640Any student when fully trained will be
like his teacher.
  • (Any child when fully trained will
  • be like his parents)
  • Making disciples
  • Who are we that they may follow our example as
    kingdom disciples?

22
one who LOVES JESUS
  • His name must be ever on our lips
  • as we lead little children to worship Him in
    spirit and truth

23
one who LOVES JESUS CHURCH
  • We must know the children and show love toward
    the children in our church.

24
one who LOVES THE WORD
  • We must love the Word ourselves and believe in
    its power unto salvation

25
Lets take a new look at
  • Scripture Memory
  • Catechism
  • Hymnology
  • What are we hiding in their hearts at the most
    formidable time for lifetime learning?

26
one who SERVES HIS PEOPLE
  • Our children must be trained to come alongside us
in ministry opportunities at the earliest age
    possible.

27
one who NEEDS THE BODY
  • We must serve them well in word and deed so they
may develop a healthy reliance upon Gods people.

28
one who TRUSTS HIM IN TRIALS
  • Are we telling our God
  • stories so that our
  • churchs children are
  • continually seeing
  • proof of His faithfulness and sufficient grace?

29
one who FINDS STRENGTH IN
ETERNAL SECURITY
  • Are we giving very intentional gospel
presentations? Do they witness our own delight
in the surety of an eternal heavenly home?

30
one who LONGS TO INTRODUCE JESUS TO
THE WORLD IN WORD AND DEED
  • Are the children following our lead as we
passionately take the Gospel outside our church
to the community and the world?

31
one who RECOGNIZES THE ENEMY AND HIS SCHEMES
  • We must not be afraid to
  • name him and point out
  • his antics
  • To pray against him.
  • Lords Prayer

32
one who PRAYS CONTINUALLY THAT THESE THINGS MAY
BE SO
  • Are we praying the Lords prayer on Sunday
    morning only?
  • Lord, teach us to pray.

33
PSALM 788
  • To reach the next generation with the truthto
truly make kingdom disciplesWe must become a
visibly repentant generation of family and church
    leaders.

34
PRAY that God will raise up kingdom disciples
  • In your church
  • In this decade
  • In our generation and the next

  • What is the 2020 Vision?  Here at Christian
Education and Publications we want to help the
local church with training and resources that
will enable you to spend this decade focused on
training up a generation of Kingdom disciples.
In both youth and childrens ministries we want
our churches to ask the question, What do we
want our 4 year-olds to be like when they are
fourteen?  In ten years, what place do we want
our 15 year-olds to have as young men and women
    in the church?
  •
  • As we answer those questions together, we must
become very intentional about the kind of
ministry we will have in the next decade to
realize our vision for the year 2020 His church
filled with strong Jesus men and Jesus women!
  •
  • 2020 VISION will include conferences, new
    resources, online communications and local
training to help us pray together, train parents
and church leadership, and connect as a church in
the task of making disciples of our children.
