  • Rome was very crowded, noisy, smoky, and dusty
  • Huge buildings and temples
  • Large state festivals, games, dramas, races,
    fighting events

Clothing
  • Togas were not in style for long
  • Tunics were used instead
  • Similar to a long t-shirt (linen in the summer
    wool in the winter)
  • Men would wear rings (sign of wealth)
  • Women wore lots of jewelry (pearls were their
    favorite)

School
  • Goal of education was to be an effective speaker
  • Only wealthy were able to receive formal
    education
  • Taught counting, grammar, Latin, Greek
  • Poor were sometimes educated at home
  • Girls were taught domestic skills

Baths
  • Men and women tried to visit the baths once a day
  • Hot and cold pools, towels, slaves to wait on
    you, steam rooms, saunas, exercise rooms, hair
    cutting salons
  • Some were small (300 people) some were huge
    (1500 people)
  • No kids allowed

Roman Houses
  • Plebeians lived in apartment style houses
  • Sometimes entire families (grandparents, parents,
    children) lived in one apartment
  • Did not have toilets, running water
  • Wealthy had large houses with courtyards
  • Some had baths, plumbing, running water
  • Beautiful paintings have been found on the walls
    mosaic floors

  • Lots of theatres
  • Colosseum held 45,000 people
  • Bloody combat sometimes flooded with water for
    naval battles
  • Animal vs. human events

  • Head of the family was the oldest male (could be
    an uncle)
  • He owned all the property and was responsible for
    the actions of his family
  • Woman had no authority
  • She took care of the house
  • During the empire women had more rights
  • Could own property, free slaves, make wills, get
    s job

Roman Buildings
  • Roman invented concrete which allowed them to
    build strong buildings and build them quickly
  • Roman roads connected the empire and made travel
    much easier
  • Aqueducts brought water from springs in the hills
  • Some were 40 miles long

Gladiators / Slavery
  • Three types of gladiators
  • Samnite, Secutor, retiarius
  • Trained at schools called a Ludus

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • For the poor food was very simple olives,
    cheese, raisins, bread
  • Upper class enjoyed all the foods of the world
  • Children sometimes served their parents
  • Lunch was eaten around 11 oclock
  • Lunch was followed by a 2-3 hour break
