Marking of the International Week for
Eradication of Poverty FYR Macedonia, 17th- 24th
October 2005

• Media Advisory
• On its 60th Anniversary and Poverty Week which
  is marked every year, the United Nations is
  organizing a UN caravan that will tour the
  country from 17th- 24 October 2005.
• Under the banner of the Millennium Development
  Goals (MDG) the caravan will visit a variety
  municipalities throughout the week and dedicate
  each day to one of the Millennium Development
  Goals. The UN bus will visit different UN
  projects and show how the MDG agenda is moved
  forward. The bus will be accompanied by
  government officials, UN officials and members of
  the private sector and civil society.
• Poverty Week traditionally takes place from 17th
  24th October and is marked throughout the
  world. Kick started with the International Day
  for the Eradication of Poverty on 17th October
  poverty week speaks to the more than one billion
  people living on this earth on less than 1 a
  day.
• Culminating on UN Day celebrated on 24th October
  poverty week this year is globally organized
  under the Theme Achieving the Millennium
  Development Goals Empowering the poorest of the
  poor.

Mayor of Skopje
Kostovski and several representatives of
companies members of the Global Compact joined
the UN caravan, headed by UN Resident Coordinator
Mauring. The caravans main destination was the
citys Zoo which is unfortunately in a very poor
condition. The situation is likely to improve
soon because 11 GC companies partnered up, at
their own initiative, in order to make a
difference.

18TH OctoberDAY 2ACHIEVING UNIVERSAL PRIMARY
EDUCATION

The caravan headed to the most remote village
in northern Macedonia, Bistrica, in order to
visit an elementary school reconstructed by the
World Bank and an Early Childhood Development
Center, supported by UNICEF. Thanks to them the
children from this area now have good conditions
to pursue their studying. Representatives of the
Ministry of Education joined this trip which
aimed at further promoting the importance of
primary education.

EXCLUSION

UN Representatives, also dressed in MDG
T-shirts, enjoying the performance
The caravan headed to the Roma
municipality of Suto Orizari, which is also host
to many Roma refugees from Kosovo. Macedonian
Minister for Labour and Social Policy Jakimovski,
UN RC Mauring, World Bank RR Bloemenkamp and
UNHCR Representative Walker visited the local
school where they held a press conference and
later attended a special performance by the
refugee orchestra band.

WOMEN EMPOWEREMENT

Association Welcomes UN caravan
UN staff advocates for gender empowerment
Empowered with Parliament members and
representatives of women NGOs, the UN caravan
visited the municipalities of Berovo and Kocani,
advocating for gender equality. Headed by UNDP
DRR Norimasa Shimomoura, the caravan members
promoted the CEDAW report in Berovo and later on
assisted at the promotion of the women
entrepreneurs and the farmers association in
Kocani.

21st OctoberDAY 5COMBAT HIV AIDS AND
TUBERCULOSIS
Center for Psychosocial support for People living
with HIV
Macedonian Health Minister Dimov and UN RC Mauring
In order to show its strong commitment for
combating HIV AIDS and Tuberculosis, the UN
caravan visited the Center for psychosocial
support for People living with HIV, and the Youth
Friendly Clinic for sexual and reproductive
health I want to know in Skopje. UN RC
Mauring and Macedonian Health Minister Dimov gave
media statements on the importance to keep
Macedonia in the group of low prevalence
countries.

22nd OctoberDAY 6REDUCE INFANT MORTALITY AND
IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH
The UN caravan, led by UNICEF and WHO
representatives headed to the municipality of
Kumanovo, advocating for reduction of infant
mortality and improvement of maternal health. A
baby friendly hospital was visited, showing how
much the conditions for both mothers and babies
have been improved in this municipality.

SUSTAINABILITY
Resen - Promoting MDGs
Apples without pesticides- the pride of Resen
The UN caravan, led by UN RC Mauring visited the
municipality of Resen in order to further promote
the importance of environmental sustainability.
For this purpose, a bicycle race was organized,
bringing together more than 60 participants of
different age groups. Resen is the place where
UNDP is implementing the largest number of
environment related projects, together with many
national and international partners. Resen is the
home of the Prespa lake, a globally significant
ecosystem, identified as one of Europe 24 major
trans-boundary ecological bricks.
