The Worlds Best Country?
  • Most and Least Livable Countries UN Human
    Development Index, 2004
  • The Human Development Index (HDI), published
annually by the UN, ranks nations according to
their citizens' quality of life rather than
strictly by a nation's traditional economic
figures. The criteria for calculating rankings
    include life expectancy, educational attainment,
    and adjusted real income.

Economic Overview
  • The Norwegian economy is a prosperous bastion of
welfare capitalism, featuring a combination of
free market activity and government intervention.
The government controls key areas, such as the
vital petroleum sector (through large-scale state
enterprises). The country is richly endowed with
natural resources -- petroleum, hydropower, fish,
forests, and minerals -- and is highly dependent
on its oil production and international oil
prices, with oil and gas accounting for one-third
    of exports.

North Sea Oil
Norwegians worry about the time in the next two
decades when the oil and gas begin to run out.
Accordingly, Norway has been saving its
oil-boosted budget surpluses in a Government
Petroleum Fund, which is invested abroad and now
is valued at more than 43 billion.
9
HydroelectricDams
Rånåsfoss Dam, Sörum
Norway produces virtually all of its energy
through hydro power, saving millions in energy
costs and air pollution with regard to coal-fired
plants.

Crop Specialization
  • Billberries (Vaccinium myrtillus)
  • The European species is known as bilberry,
whereas the North American variety is known as
blueberry. Bilberry grows in pine and fir woods
on level semi-shaded areas and on heathland. The
unique 'bilberry flavor' is only found in the
    wild bilberry.

Borgund Stavekirke
With the establishment of Christianity in Norway
one thousand years ago, the culture of
continental Europe gained a first foothold in the
country. The meeting between the new culture and
the old gave rise to impulses which made a
considerable impression on Norwegian society.
The largest and most ornately designed stave
church in Norway is Borgund church.

Bryggen World Heritage Site
  • Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, is a reminder
of the town's importance as part of the Hanseatic
League's trading empire from the 14th to the
mid-16th century. Many fires, the last in 1955,
have ravaged the beautiful wooden houses of
Bryggen but its main structure has been
preserved. Many of the remaining 58 buildings are
    now used as artists' studios.
