IRD programme
  • The IRD programme provides a support scheme for
    Norwegian companies (suppliers) looking for joint
    product or technology development projects with
    customers in need of new products or solutions
    (clients).
  • The IRD programme is designed to stimulate
    partnerships related to product and technology
    development between a supplier company and a
    client company / public entity.

    project costs of the Norwegian company

  • If the Norwegian company enters into a RD
    contract with a company in a EU-member state, 15
    can be added to the support rate (bonus)

IRD terms and conditions
  • The level of innovation in the project should be
    significant
  • The Norwegian supplier must retain intellectual
    property for the product/service developed
  • The funding shall act as a trigger for getting
    the project underway

Earplug that allows communication in noisy
environment
SINTEF came up with the idea of ear protection
using counter sound in the early 90s. Company
Nacre AS Demanding customers Norwegian and
Swedish defense forces.
IRD grant 4 mill.
NOK in 2000/2001
  • Need for better communication and ear protection
    of soldiers that often operate in extremely noisy
    environment.
  • First demo of QUIETPRO in 2004, a special earplug
    that integrates ear protection and communication.
  • Test delivery in 2005 and 2006.
  • Breakthrough in 2006 with a 200 mill. NOK
    contract with US Marine.
  • Altogether 120 mill. NOK has been spent on
    development and marketing.

  • Demanding customer Zoran Corp., USA

The technology development was initiated in 1998
by 5 students at NTNU.
  • In 2006 the company was bought by ARM Ltd at a
    cost of 150-180 mill. NOK and the name changed to
    ARM Norway AS. The development work continues in
    Norway and the number of employees will increase
    to 55 in 2007. ARM Ltd supply 90 of the
    international market for mobile telephones
    processors.
  • The company received the Reodor award in the fall
    of 2006.
