The framework is based on the seven roles that
all physicians need to have, to be better
doctors Medical Expert, Communicator,
Collaborator, Manager, Health Advocate, Scholar,
and Professional.

Medical Expert As Medical Experts, physicians
integrate all of the CanMEDS Roles, applying
medical knowledge, clinical skills, and
professional attitudes in their provision of
patient-centered care. Medical Expert is the
central physician Role in the CanMEDS framework.

such their clinical skills include the need to
understand the patients perspective and
experience of illness opening up the need to
attach importance to subjective aspects of
medicine. Family physicians are engaged with
their patients emotions, and may become an
important part of the patients network of
