  • It is a country which is less economically
    developed
  • Mainly in Africa, the Far East and Central and
    South America
  • They have all experienced colonisation by
    wealthier countries at some time

  • We are now seen as an advanced society, with
    relative wealth, world status and political

    life, develop politically and socio-economically
  • They are still emerging from tribal level

  • Firstly, we need to understand the meaning of the
    characteristics of sport in emergent societies
  • Secondly, we need to look at selected emergent
    countries in relation to them

  • HEALTH
  • Healthy workforce is needed for any nation hoping
    to emerge into the modern world
  • An improved standard of living can only be
    achieved if the community is disease free
  • Sport can promote a healthy lifestyle
  • It can be an alternative to activities such as
    drugs or alcohol
  • Sporting excellence is more likely if the Society
    is healthy

  • Countries with tribal history often experience
    internal disputes
  • Strong leaders, authoritarian govts military
    power have been used to suppress this
  • Sport can bring groups together calm tension

  • A strong army police force are needed stability

  • They want to be like their role model
  • They will work hard to achieve this

UNEQUAL FUNDING (disproportionate)
  • An emergent society will not have the funding
    resources to reach excellence at the start
  • However, some sports will gain much more funding
    than others
  • Some will remain neglected

SELECTION (Elitism)
  • Emergent societies will select and specialise in
    one sport
  • It could be one that is popular, suits the
    climate, landscape, altitude, lifestyle or
    physique of the people
  • Once success and recognition is achieved there
    will be a greater selection of sports pursued by
    a greater number of people

HIGH PROFILE/LOW TECHNOLOGY
  • A Country that seeks international recognition
    will choose a high status, world renowned sport
    to achieve maximum exposure
  • But, with technology largely under developed,
    sports that are simple, natural and do not
    require expensive technology and equipment are
    chosen
