  brush with death, their life flashes before their
  eyes
• What do you think might be the last thoughts of a
  person about to die?
• Would the such a person think about the meaning
  of life, loved ones left behind, or the immediate
  situation?

Bierce

• Bierce enlisted in the Union Army at age 18 and
  fought bravely in several major battles of the
  Civil War.
• Afterwards he moved to San Francisco and became a
  successful journalist.
• In An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge he
  fictionalized a true story of a man condemned to
  hang in 1862.
• His first hand knowledge of the war and his
  training as a reporter help color the opening
  scene of a hanging that is about to take place.
