Collaboration is Like a Kaleidoscope
  • As the kaleidoscope is rotated, different
configurations of the same collection of colored
shapes appear. Collaboration involves building a
common understanding of how these images appear
from their respective points of view. This
understanding forms the basis for choosing a
    collective course of action.
  • Barbara Gray, Collaboration The Constructive
    Management of Differences

  • A group can exert enormous pressures on its
members to adhere to its norms and beliefs in
extreme cases, these pressures produce groupthink
or polarization of attitudes to risk which amount
    to distortion of judgment.

14
Addressing GroupThink
  • For a group to function effectively and smoothly
there has to be a certain amount of agreement on
how to do things on the other hand, it is
important for the group to adapt to changing
conditions, and change is brought about by
    individuals deviating from the norms.

  • Cooperative behavior is directed towards shared
goals. It contributes information and expertise
openly, is predictable, though not inflexible,
avoids threats and is supportive towards others.

increasing the rewards for creativity or for
eliminating the penalties especially the social
    penalties for expressing ideas freely.
