3What is Classification Web?
- Library of Congress Classification Schedules.
- Library of Congress Subject Headings.
- Delivered on a World Wide Web interface.
4History of Classification Web
- Software was originally designed to assist LC
staff in editing MARC classification records. - Implementation of Web interface made it more
attractive as an end-user cataloging tool. - Decision was made for CDS to Pilot test and
eventually make Classification Web available to
users outside of the Library of Congress.
5Current Status of Classification Web
- Available since May 2002, 1,500 sites from around
the world currently subscribe to Class Web with
over 9,000 concurrent users. - In June 2004, CDS completed negotiations with
OCLC to enable Classification Web to display
correlations between Dewey classification numbers
and LC classification or LC subject headings as
they appear in LC bibliographic records.
6Future Upgrades for Classification Web
- Upgrading to Minaret 3 interface.
- Implementing non-roman character set display.
- Moving to an external server.
7Future Enhancements for Classification Web
- Ability to download MARC records from all files.
- The inclusion of the LC name authority file as an
optional feature. - Navigation enhancements such as direct links from
subject headings to local OPACs and the ability
to include more locally defined OPACs.

- All files are updated weekly.
- Links to local OPACS of a number of libraries and
the ability to create a link to your own local
OPAC. - Includes notes feature
- Individual notes for the solo user.
- Institutional notes for sites.

- Hypertext links between and among LC
classification schedules and subject headings. - Correlations between LC classification and LC
subject headings. - Powerful search navigation tools.
- Automatic calculation of table numbers.

- Hard-coded link to bibliographic records in LC
OPAC. - Correlations between Dewey classification numbers
and LC classification numbers as well as
correlations between Dewey classification numbers
and LC subject headings.
