Overall Goal

• The students will understand the concept of an
  endangered specie and be exposed to different
  facets of sea life through literature and science

Objectives

• Demonstrate a pattern in the history of a sea
  mammal
• Instill a desire in the student to look at the
  bigger picture of existence
• Learn how to use affective and cognitive domains
  while researching information

Focus

• Students will gain interest in the lesson by
  viewing a DVD featurette on the symbiotic
  relationship between man and whale and also take
  a historical and modern look at sperm whales

• (c)(3)(A) analyze, review, and critique
  scientific explanations, including hypotheses and
  theories, as to their strengths and weaknesses
  using scientific evidence and information
• (c)(3)(B) draw inferences based on data related
  to promotional materials for products and
  services
• (c)(3)(C) evaluate the impact of research on
  scientific thought, society, and the environment

• DVD player, DVD featurette on the symbiotic
  relationship between man and whale, television,
  Power Point lecture handouts
• Internet access through library computers

Activities

• Use Pathfinder for instructional purposes
• Scavenger Hunt Students will explore online 5
  ways to help save a species and report 3 ideas
  for each in which they may be improved (may work
  in groups of 2-3)

Assessment

• A presentation using two online sources and two
  books and a one page essay summarizing the 5 ways
  explored and what can be improved in each.

Closure

• Essays completed in second class
• Present Ideas as groups
