    at
  • Main base Vienna maintenance for all jet
    aircraft (64 A/C)
  • Beginning of Human Factors Training Dec.2000
  • since then approximately 700 trainings
    performed

4
Types of Human Factors Training
  • Basic- i.a.w.Part-147 within category A,B1 and
B2 courses- for certifying staff with
grandfather rights- for qualifying staff- for
    administrative personnel- for workshop staff-
for planning staff- customized HF Basic
Trainings for 3rd party customers (not
    necessarily from the aviation industry)

5
Types of Human Factors Training
  • Refresher Trainings- in accordance with EASA
Part-145- customized HF Refresher Trainings for
    3rd party customers

6
Challenges and Solutions
  • End of the year 2000 no rules for HF training in
place gt management decision to perform these
trainings to be prepared for JAR-66
(01/06/2001)- acceptance by staff very low- HF
is not a technical issue, so why do certifying
staff need it?- HF was considered to be a
psychological traininggt people were in a
way afraid of it- no budget

7
Challenges and Solutions
  • - no appropriate training for the instructors
available- not a lot of training material and
    manuals available
  • Within the first years of HF Training the big
issues were the budget and the commitment of
    management people wanted senior management
personnel to show up at least at the beginning of
the course (or to attend the whole course)

8
Challenges and Solutions
  • Refresher trainings- for the first continuation
period how to update the school notes,
    implementation of actual incidents/accidents/eve
nts that happened in our own company- reasons
for attending this psycho-training again and
    again..- still the commitment by
    management- the gap between theoretical
contents and practical experiences in every
day life- struggling against the idea of
    conducting web based refresher training
    only!!!!!

9
Challenges and Solutions
  • Solutions- more and more management staff could
be convinced to attend- implementation of EASA
Part-145 forced everybody in the technical
department to attend, not only certifying
staff- additional contents of the training, such
    as MEDA investigations practical examples
of maintenance errors at Austrian Technik,
    their analysis and resulting preventive
actions.- regular change of practical parts of
the training (games, videos A/C visits to find
out possible sources of human error,)

10
Challenges and Solutions
  • - Maintenance Info / Safety Info to spread
    important facts about maintenance (mostly
HUMAN) errors - collection of ideas for
    improvement of working environment, tools,
    etc.- regular information about improvements-
    co-operation with trade union representatives
(shop stewards)- close co-operation with other
training organizations / Part-145 AMOs for
exchange of experience, training materials and
    ideas

11
Challenges and Solutions
  • but most of all
  • - ALWAYS listen to people's concerns, problems
    in every day life!!!

12
Safety Management Human Factors
  • 01.Jan.2009 ICAO Safety Management System
    becomes mandatory also for maintenance
organizations- big chance to update HF training
contents for the next continuation training
period - involve people from working level more
and more in hazard and risk identifications but
also in error prevention and therefore in daily
    human factors issues- implementation of
internal reporting systemwe wanted to have
such a system for HF since years gt now there
is no excuse for not having it!

13
Future of HF Training
  • - we want to train more people to become HF
    instructors peers for continuation trainings
  • - we definitely train more people to become a
MEDA investigator (important relation to HF
    training)
  • - more practical examples planned resulting
from incident analysis we create real life case
studies were people might make the same
mistakes as in every day life
