The children have used the council chamber to
interview politicians like the Mayor of Tower
Hamlets, to hold their own elections, and to
discuss and vote on their own issues. These
pictures are from a Tower Hamlets Young Peoples
Plan project with George Green School councillors
training primary school children about democracy,
decision making, childrens rights and
constitutions.

Primary and Secondary School Councils are
encouraged to discuss and vote on the Declaration
for Democracy. This is then framed, presented to
the Town Hall and displayed on the Fair Play
Wall, between the Mayors Parlour and the Council
Chamber. As they build-up it is hoped that they
will be replaced with school council
constitutions.

day debate issues of sustainability in the
Council Chamber.
Schools can download a pdf guide to using the
Town Hall which has pages on preparation,
activities to do before, during and after the
visit, focusing on sustainability and fairtrade
as well as local democracy. There is also an
online webquest with activities and video clips
of interviews

The children then voted that every school in
Tower Hamlets should have the opportunity to take
part in the same workshop!
Children interview Anna Roth, Education Officer
from the Jewish Museum, about Janus Korczak, his
life and his democratic orphanage. They then
held their own childrens court in the Council
Chamber.

On 18th June children from KS2 and 3 will be able
to interview Geoffery Robertson QC, human rights
