Title: UV Rays and the Sun

1
UV Rays and the Sun
  • The sun produces both visible and invisible rays.
The invisible rays, known as ultraviolet-A (UVA)
and ultraviolet-B (UVB), cause most of the
problems. Both cause suntan, sunburn, and sun
damage. There is no "safe" UV light.

More about UV rays
  • Harmful UV rays are more intense in the summer,
at higher altitudes, and closer to the equator.
For example, Florida receives 150 more UV than
Maine. The sun's harmful effects are also
increased by wind and reflections from water,
sand, and snow. Even on cloudy days UV radiation
reaches the earth and can cause skin damage. The
UV index is a prediction of ultraviolet intensity
in a given location. It can be found in the
weather section of most large daily newspapers
    and some television weather forecasts

There are several types of light
  • This is the suns light spectrum. The sun has
three types of rays ultraviolet, visible, and
infrared. The rays that cause damage to our skin
    are the ultraviolet rays.

How do I protect myself?
  • It is important to protect yourself from the
suns UV rays. Here are some ways to avoid skin
    damage
  • UV rays are most powerful during midday, so try
to stay indoors at this time.
  • Wear clothes that will cover most of your skin.
  • Wear sunscreen with at least a SPF of 15.
  • Wear a hat to keep the sun off your face.
  • Wear sunglasses to help protect your eyes.

5
How do I learn more?
  • There is a lot to learn about UV rays and how
they affect you. Try searching this website with
    interactivities, games, episode IV with
