Pilot Study

• Water drinking patterns of residents in five care
  homes
• Good hydration can improve alertness and prevent
  spells of dizziness
• Could reduce number of falls and accidents
  amongst older people
• Pilot study began in April and will run for six
  months

Schools

• School Food Trusts nutritional standards
  free, fresh drinking water should be available
  at all times
• Healthy School Standard access to free, clean,
  palatable drinking water
• Good drinking water policies in primary schools

Secondary Schools

• Three pilot schools to help us develop a model
• Steering group established
• Presentations to teachers on INSET days
• Focus groups and questionnaires
• Research part one survey involving 3300
  students
• 12 week trial with water coolers and refillable
  bottles
• Research part two Follow up to measure impact
  and evaluate trial
• Competition to design a logo and posters to brand

Research Part One

• Virtually no acceptable free drinking water
  facilities
• One in four drank no water at all during school
  day
• The older the child, the less water they drank
• 77 simply wanted improved access to water during
  the school day
• 40 avoided school toilets
• Just 24 thought tap water was clean enough to
  drink
• Year 9 were least enthusiastic

Research Part Two

• Post trial questionnaire to 3300 students and
  teachers
• Those who claim never to drink water fell to one
  in 10
• 83 of students now find it easier to get a drink
  of water for free
• 39 of students claim to drink more water 3.5
  extra glasses per day
• Students who drink more claim to be less thirsty
  in class concentrating better in class
  performing better at sport/PE feeling healthier
• Nearly 70 of students claim to use a refillable
  water bottle at some stage during the week
• Teachers noticed improvements in students and
  themselves
