• Daugavpils fortress is the only one of such kind
  in Europe that has preserved without significant
  changes since the 19th century
• Daugavpils fortress possesses a unique
  fortification system

• Planning the fortress began in 1772
• Construction began during Napoleon attack to the
  Russian Empire in 1810 and was completed in 1878
• 10 000 souls in two shifts were building the
  fortress
• In 1812, attacked by 24 000 men, the fortress
  was still under construction and was defended by
  3300 men and 200 cannons

• The fortress was meant to be a significant and
  up-to date military centre of the Russian Empire
• For a long time it was a defence base of the
  western border of the Russian Empire
• The direct route from Vilnius to St. Petersburg
  lead right through the fortress gates

  his way abroad

• 1920 1940 the fortress was a home of the
  Latvian army
• During the WWII the hostage camp was set up in
  the fortress
• 1948 1994 the soviet army was dislocated in the
  fortress
• 1998 the fortress came under the authority of
  the State Real Estate Agency of Latvia

• The fortress has remained unchanged till nowadays
  including its truly unique fortification system
• Its composition comprises the main fortress with
  empire and classicism buildings and a highly
  developed defence system
• The height of wall beds 11 metres

• 9 meters deep dyke filled with water extends
  round the wall
• 9 original cannons from the 19th century have
  remained in the fortress
